Wicca 101 – Day 7 – Special Lesson

We all know you’re interested in Wicca. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be here, right? Well, you can read all that I post and still wonder where I get my information. This particular lesson will tell you exactly what I’ve read so you can go and read it yourself.

Many different Wicca 101 lessons will talk about specific things like prayers, the Divine, herbs, and the like. If you don’t find yourself wondering where I’m getting my information, then you should really think about asking yourself that.

Now, I haven’t had anyone ask me specifically. Not yet. I guess I put it across in a friendly way when I type these up, but I’d rather people wondered. Question everything, my friends. If you want to know my sources that I’ve studied over the years (around nearly 20 of them)then this is the post where you may refer.
Back when I first started, I read Teen Witch by Silver Ravenwolf. I can’t really recall too much about it since it was almost 20 years ago, but it was my first book.

After that, I went on to Scott Cunningham. Various titles by him. Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, Living Wicca, The Truth About Witchcraft Today, Wicca in the Kitchen, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Earth Power, Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, Magical Herbalism, and his published Book of Shadows. I believe that’s all of them by him. Though I don’t use it in Wicca 101, I’ve got Hawaiian Magic and Spirituality by him, too.

Along the lines of Wicca 101, I’ve read several Silver Ravenwolf books, but I don’t own them anymore. I prefer Cunningham. A lot of people like Silver, but I prefer Scott’s almost casual business-like manner more than Silver’s joking one.

For something closer to Wicca 201, there’s a book by Dianne Sylvan called The Circle Within. It has a more in-depth look of the faith and has more pointers on how to make it yours. The subtitle is Creating a Spiritual Wiccan Tradition, after all.
I’ve also read Witch Crafting by Phyllis Curott, too. Also different Green Witchcraft books by Ann Moura. Several books by Kate West. DJ Conway. I’ve even enjoyed The Idiot’s Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft. Don’t knock the Idiot’s Guide, either. It’s amazing for basic information. Sabbats by Edain McCoy is on my list of books I’ve read, too.
Another book that goes into the basics, but also asks WHY you want to be a witch is If You Want to Be a Witch by Edain McCoy. I love this book. There’s a questionnaire in the book that I suggest answering first, then read the book, then re-answer the questions. It’s rather enlightening.

So there are most of my sources. I’m sure I’m forgetting a couple, but I’ve read so many books that it’s not funny. I’m rebuilding my collection after donating many of my titles. Just today I bought Scott’s Earth Power, Earth, Aire, Fire, Water, and the Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs to re-add to my collection. I did keep a few titles. But even if I ever stray away from Wicca again, these books will go into a box rather than giving them all away.

I hope this helps in letting all of you know where I get much of my information. There isn’t anyone book where I get everything; my information is all of these books and my own experiences all mashed into one thought. So, if you’ve ever wondered how I know all that I know, I’ve read these books over many years. None of them are bad. Singly, they don’t offer all of the information I feel a Wiccan should know. Used in conjunction with one another, these titles helped me to get where I am today.

Ways of the Witch - Divination and Time "To the aware witch, time is not a continuous ribbon passing under the keys of some celestial typewriter, but rather a complex field extending into many different directions and dimensions. Given that view of time, that a man should possess a definite future as concrete as his past and present, albeit unseen for the most part, will not strike a witch in any way as odd or unrealistic. The whole process of divination of the future rests on this approach to an understanding of the true nature of time. Paradoxically, although the future is already ‘out there’, the witch does not feel that her actions are already doomed to one simple course by rigid predestination. The nearest approach to an explanation would be to say that each one of us, at every moment of time, confronts a series of different choices in action. One of these ways we will take, for whatever reason. We can make the destiny ‘out there’ become a good one or a bad one, depending on our varied talents, opportunities and choices. (When we divine), we are reading the strongest marked possible future. This doesn't mean there aren't other possible futures, but the one most likely from the point of view at that moment of prophesying." The Educated Occultist – Out of Body Experience (OBE)

“An OBE is a phenomenon in which a person feels projected from the body to distant locations, even to non-physical worlds.

Although descriptions of them date to ancient times, the phenomenon has never been proven scientifically and no satisfactory explanation for it exists.

OBEs are also known as ‘astral projection’, ‘astral travel’ and ‘exteriorization’.

Approximately one-quarter of Western adults claim to have had at least one OBE.

Bilocation, the appearance of double, crisis apparitions, reciprocal apparitions and near death experiences may involve OBEs.

Some projectors say they feel like points of light or energy; some say they perceive a silvery cord, called the astral cord that connects their projection to their physical body.

Researchers who have studied OBEs cannot define precisely what an OBE is.

Various theories propose that: it is an actual projection of some form, like an astral body; it is the projection of consciousness which others may perceive as having a physical form; it is a hallucinatory experience, it is a mental projection characterized by ESP.

Despite the lack of proof, the belief that consciousness can separate from the body is universal.

The ancient Egyptians believed in a traveling ‘Ka’, a vehicle of the mind and soul (Ba).

Plato also held that the soul could leave the body and travel. Other ancient Greek and Roman philosophers such as Socrates, Pliny, Plotinus and Plutarch, wrote of their experiences…in shamanism, the shaman’s work is performed ‘out-of-body’ in an altered state.”

  • Tonight is Robert Burns Night! Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns' contribution to Scottish culture. Burns' best known work is "Auld Lang Syne". Many hold a "Burns' supper" on or near this night, with toasts and readings of his poetry. The evening may center on the entrance of the haggis on a platter to the sound of bagpipes. When the haggis is on the table, the host reads the "Address to a Haggis", an ode that Robert Burns wrote to the Scottish dish, at the end of which the haggis is ceremonially sliced into two pieces and the meal begins.

Announcing a New Book by Sacramento
Druid, Poet, Artist, And Celtic Historian
Michael R. Gorman
(The Lambda Award Winning Author
Of the Ground-breaking Biography
Of Activist Jose Sarria,
The Empress Is A Man.”)

“The Celtic Philosopher’s Stone: Volume One
Not Your Father’s European History”

Philip Carr-Gomm, the Chief Druid of
The Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids
And Internationally Published Author of
“The Druid Renaissance,”
Says of Michael Gorman’s New Book:

Michael Gorman's book, is more than another book of history.
Instead, it is an impassioned plea for looking not only at our past,
but at the world that surrounds us now - with all its beauties and
iniquities. With the fluidity of Celtic knot work, the subjects of history,
sexual politics, social commentary and autobiography are woven
together to create a powerful case for appreciating the world
of the Celts and their extraordinary legacy.”

Celtic and Pagan

These two words get bandied about often these days in America and Europe, but few people who use these words know the true story behind them, or even what their accurate translations from the Gaelic and Greek (Celt/Keltoi) or the Latin (Paganus) are, even among the people who use these words to define their philosophical, spiritual, and ethnic identities. Even fewer people know the extent of the Celtic civilization and why the Celts came to be called Keltoi by the Greek Empires and Paganus by the Roman Empire.  Most do not recognize that most people of European descent have Celtic blood in their genealogical backgrounds. Very few have ever been taught that the Celtic world once included most of the European continent and had historic ties to India, Russia, and the Middle East. We all have heard the observation that the victors write the history, but how could such a massive and advanced culture be completely left out of Western textbooks, schools, and cultural knowledge? Therein lies the story of perhaps the most successful conspiracy in human history, and one of the most brutal, and almost successful, examples of genocide as well. The new book, “The Celtic Philosopher’s Stone, Volume One: Not Your Father’s European History” finally tells the story that was almost lost to history. Readers of this book will come away knowing more about the Celtic world and the Pagan world than most people alive today, and about the deep roots of  the Western Culture that owes more than we were ever told to its Celtic Pagan ancestors, yet this profound subject is told with the voice and humor of a master storyteller that makes it readable for all of us. So grab some marshmallows, sit by the fire, and learn about the amazing heritage you never knew you had.

    Who Was Brighid?
In Irish mythological cycles, Brighid (or Brighit), whose name is derived from the Celtic brig or "exalted one", is the daughter of the Dagda, and therefore one of the Tuatha de Dannan. Her two sisters were also called Brighid, and were associated with healing and crafts. The three Brighids were typically treated as three aspects of a single deity, making her a classic Celtic triple goddess. Brighid was the patron of poets and bards, as well as healers and magicians: Profile of Brighid
