from Patti Wigington 2009 has drawn to a close, and we're looking at a brand new year. I'm sure 2010 will be full of some fascinating stories as well, but for now, let's look at some of the issues and topics we talked about here at About Pagan/Wiccan. I hope you'll all continue to participate as you've done this past year. May all of you have a wonderful and blessed 2010. In the Spotlight
2009 in Review: Discoveries Just for something a bit different, this year's recap begins with a look at some of the important archaeological and historical discoveries we saw in 2009. These stories were important because they helped us to understand how our ancestors must lived hundreds - and even thousands - of years ago. We saw mummies, Middle Eastern shamans, Iron Age butter, ancient tombs, and more...Read More
2009 in Review: The Legal Cases 2009 had a number of significant legal cases, many of which pertained to religious discrimination and freedoms. We saw license plates promoting religions, saw schools and teachers in conflict over the separation of church and state, and read about people who were fired for what may well have been religious reasons...Read More
2009 in Review: How People See Religion This year was an interesting one for the changing ways that people view religion. A number of surveys and studies revealed some results that were significant to people in minority faiths. While some people claimed to have never even heard ot Wicca, religious persecution continued on a global scale. Thankfully, many people and groups tried to help educate and illuminate the rest of the world...Read More

from Patti Wigington In the Pagan community, there are many names you'll hear referenced time and time again. Typically, they're folks who are either Pagans or scholars or both. Other times, they're people who have had an important influence on Pagan culture -- poets and folklorists, for example -- and you'll often see them mentioned on Pagan/Wiccan About.com. Today, we're going to take a look at some of the most influential names in modern Pagan spirituality. In the Spotlight
Gerald Gardner: Father of Modern Wicca Gerald Gardner launched Wicca shortly after the end of World War II, and went public with his coven following the repeal of England's Witchcraft Laws in the early 1950s. There is a good deal of debate within the Wiccan community about whether the Gardnerian path is the only "true" Wiccan tradition, but the point remains that it was certainly the first...Read MoreAuthor Scott Cunningham Author Scott Cunningham (June 27, 1956 - March 28,1993), created more than a dozen books on NeoWicca and modern Paganism. In the early 1980s, he spent some time in a group led by author Raven Grimassi. from Patti Wigington This week we're looking at the controversial "I Believe" license plates in South Carolina, a possible religious discrimination case involving a condo association and some gargoyles, and why the Parliament of World Religions is of such significance to the Pagan community. In the Discussion Forums, we're talking about so-called "dark" goddesses, letters to Santa, and the need for initiation prior to magical works. "I Believe" Plates May Come Back Remember the big hullaballoo over the South Carolina "I Believe" license plates, which featured a cross and a stained-glass window? A federal judge recently ruled that it's unconstitutional for the state government to provide them to vehicle owners. However, Christian believers in SC might be able to get those after all -- if they're sponsored by a private group, and not the state itself. The Columbia-based Palmetto Family Council has entered a request with the state Department of Motor Vehicles to... Hart's partner says of the gargoyles, "These are like angels to Christians... they are protection for the home [and] they watch over his... Ed Hubbard of WitchSchool is attending, and recently blogged about why the Parliament is important for the Pagan community. As I am out west with the Parents, we went to see a show about a group called Molly's Revenge. This Celtic Folk group is worth a listen and had a sound that had both a modern familiarity and a classic feel. The singer, Moiya Smiley was amazing and needs more exposure. Her voice equals or surpasses that of artists in my music collection.
http://www.mollysrevenge.com/
Although there is little Pagan content in the music they play, except for much mention of the land and scenery, the story of the band name has that element. This story, the Saga of Molly's Revenge, is very similar to the story of the Morrigan's first meeting with CuChullain-

They also have a Yuledance CD available. About half of the songs are recognizable Christmas standards. But there are also a few winter and family songs mixed in, if the show is an indication. Do give it a look if seasonal gifts are leaving you stumped.

More Holiday Grinchiness As Christmas gets closer, the fundamentalist zealots come slithering out of the woodwork. Take, for example, the deliciously-named Merry Hyatt, who lives in California. Merry wants the state legislature to create an initiative requiring schools "to provide children the opportunity to listen to or perform Christmas carols, and would subject the schools to litigation if the rule isn't followed." Merry would like to see Christ back in the schools for ... Read moreContrasing Views of Witches Z. Budapest has a great piece on her blog today about the different views of witches on a global level. She talks about attending the musical Wicked, which not only makes it okay to be different, but also celebrates the fact that women can put friendship ahead of the love of The Handsome Prince, which seems to be an end goal in so many tales. The flip side of the fun and empowerment of Wicked, however, is the darker side of the human race -- countries such as Africa where women and children are...Read MoreTrouble Continues for Self Help Guru Remember James Arthur Ray, the self-help guy who hosted a sweat lodge event in Sedona, in which three people died back in October? from Patti Wigington We're wrapping up our Solstice celebrations -- either for Yule or Litha, depending on where you live -- and this week we're talking about a student whose school district changed a curriculum -- but there may be more to the story than meets the eye. Niagara Falls 98 Years Ago

Margaret writes:Her mother had a cousin living in Niagara Falls that year. She told the family that she and her neighbors woke up in the night feeling something was wrong. It took a while but they finally realized that it was the lack of noise. They had all become so used to the roar of the falls that the silence was unusual enough to alert their senses. Of course at that time nearly all the houses were near the falls. Amazing pictures! Almost 100 years old. Can you imagine walking on Niagara falls?

Greetings all,Most of you probably don't know me. My name is Kim and I am the mother of 2 miracle children. My son, Sebastian is 4 and a half years old. He is a sweet, sensitive, headstrong taurus! He has high functioning austism which is called aspergers and he has some sensory issues. My daughter, Marley-Jude Aurora is a miracle baby conceived after I was told I could not have any more children. Magick is so real! I had left Salt Lake to care for my dying mother in law in Arizona, and had a very hard pregnancy. I was sick to say the least and spent most of it in the hospital. I had lost 60 lbs., but my miracle angel stuck with me, and at 34 weeks, we decided she had to come out so she can grow (i have half a uterus). She was born 3 lbs 14 oz. and went straight to the NICU. Now she is 10 months old and the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Her spirit is so bright and shiny, she has been smiling and laughing since the day she was born literally. With what they had to do to me to get her out of me, now I really can't have any more children. This is hard to accept, but then I just look at my 2 babes, and can't imagine a sweeter life. Going thru this journey with her has changed me a lot.I am blessed to be a stay at home mom.I'm 32 years old married to a man who is too good for me...Michael. He saved me from my past...my past, well its better just left there, in the past. I am enjoying this beautiful white solstice and yule and feel very blessed to be back in a place of fairies and nature. I probably gave you too much info, I usually do, sorry about that! I just never know what to write in intros...lol.Well, I look forward to meeting you all, the ones I don't know and building a community for my children to thrive in, one built in love, peace, nature, respect and solidarity for the paths we walk upon as fellow Pagans. In love and light,Kim

I heard on the radio this morning a study says most Americans think negatively upon the past year. In fact, the past decade rates lower than any other decade prior to the 60's. Most Americans, apparently, are looking forward to the end of this year and this decade. We can only hope a full moon on New Year's Eve is a positive sign for all humanity. I am remaining optimistic.

Here is another example of needing to be in the right place at the right time. The moon hits its astronomically full aspect on December 31. There is a partial lunar eclipse predicted for this day (when the moon passes through Earth's shadow). The bad news is the moon becomes 'full' at about 12:35 pm when the eclipse peaks and is visible for those that are looking at it in darkness. Well, if someone is five or so time zones further east, perhaps one can see it...

The Disneyfication of Voodoo Michelle Gonzales Moldonado is a Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Miami, and is the author of several articles on Latin American and African-American religiosity, feminist theology, and theological anthropology.

A Visit From The Yule Spiritsby Richard De Angelis'Twas that night before Yule, when all 'cross the heath,Not a being was stirring; Pagan, Faerie, nor Beast,Wassail was left out and the altar adorned,To rejoice that the Sun King would soon be reborn. The children lay sleeping by the warmth of the hearth,Their dreams filled with visions of beloved Mother Earth,M'lady and I beneath blankets piled deep, had just settled down toour Solstice sleep. Then a noise in the night that would leave us no peace,Awakened us both to the honking of geese.Eager to see such a boisterous flock,When we raced to the window, our mouths dropped in shock! On the West Wind flew a gaggle of geese, white and gray,With Frau Holda behind them in Her gift-laiden dray. The figure on Her broomstick to the North sky made it clear,La Befana was approaching to bestow Yuletide cheer. From the South came a comet more bright than the Moon,And we knew Lucia would be with us soon.As these Spirits sailed Earthward o'er hilltops and trees,Frau Holda serenaded Her feathery steeds:"Fly Isolde! Fly Tristan! Fly Odin and Freya! Fly Morgaine! FlyMerlin! Fly Uranus and Gaea!May the God and Goddess inside you soar,From the clouds in the heavens to your cottage door."As soft and silent as snowflakes they fell;Their arrival announced by a faint chiming bell. They landed like angels, their bodies aglow,Their feet left no marks in the new fallen snow,Before we could ponder what next lay in store,There came a slow creaking from our threshold door.We crept from our bedroom and were spellbound to see...There in our parlor stood the Yule Trinity!Lucia the Maiden, with Her head wreathed in flame,Shown with the radiance for which she She was named,The Lightbringers eyes held the joy of a child,And she spoke with a voice that was gentle, yet wild:"May the warmth of this household ne'er fade away."Then she lit our Yule log which still burns to this day.Frau Holda in Her down cloak stood regal and tall,The Matron of Solstice, the Mother of all,Under Her gaze we felt safe and secure. Her voice was commanding, yet almost demure:"May the love in this family enrich young and old."And from the folds of Her cloak showered coins of pure gold,LaBefana wore a kerchief on Her silvery hair; The veil of the Crone who has secrets to share,In Her eyes gleamed a wisdom only gained by spent youth. Her voice was whisper, but Her words rung the truth:"May health, glad tidings, and peace fill these rooms."And she banished misfortune with a sweep of Her broom,They then left a gift by each sleeping childs head,Took a drink of our wassail, and away they all sped. While we watched them fly off through the night sky we laughed,At the wondrous magick we had found in the Craft. As they departed, the Spirits decreed..."Merry Yule To You All, And May All Blessed Be!"Hugs and kisses , Amber Blesssed Be

Has anybody been getting strange feelings from the earth? I am just wondering because, i haven't been able to sleep because of this feelings and i am also empathic and clairvoyant so im wondering if its because of my ability's that i can pick up strange energy waves.

What, exactly, makes YOU a vampire, vampire-like being, or scholar on the subject (again, not a knock even though it sounds like it...just curious)?well, you have to be someone who is a leech for lack of a better word.you crave energy. from blood, life energy, soul energy, aura energy, sexual energy, or all of them at the same time

How 'old' are you, really?35 (my soul is 2.0000 +)

Are you just the balance to the 'light' side of things, or are you truly evil?no, there is dark and light, good and bad in everything on the earth. there are good and there or evil vampires I stay to the light, white, right handed paths

If you have this bloodlust, what do you do when some woman gets her period (sorry, I couldn't resist that one...saw it posted somewhere regarding Bella from twilight)?Being that I am female, I get my period and it stinks (smell) but at that time of the month I crave sex, blood, energy, coffein, and sugar more than when I am not on it.

What are your chances for ever 'mating' and having normal kids? Would you pass this on to your kids or would they also have to be 'chosen' (as Nick said about being chosen few). Vampires are stereotypically HOT lovers, but no one ever talks about biological kids of vampires. Yes, we can have children, but many vampires I have talked to they had hard pernancies. I did die on the operating table and was revived. (we are not immortal but live long lives and look younger than our ages)

Do either of you think that a psychic vampire exists and if so are they the same, similar, or different from you? Yes, they do exist I am a si vampire we all are the same, but some of us feel they are higher, better or real because they are blood drinkers or both. more true to what a vampire is.

Have either of you 'turned' someone? If you can turn someone, doesn't that contradict the idea of being chosen? I heard you can and there are ways, but they have to have the vampire gene. most go through the awakening on there own. And were born with the vampire gene.you know if you are a vampire and you will seek out your kind.If you don't your fooling yourself, just like a guy person trying to stay straight.

Everyone (or almost everyone) claims secrecy. Why does it need to be a secret, or at least your understanding of why? It is a serious question, not a 'call out' to try to disprove (I stated that because it kinda reads that way...I have my own secrets and would probably be offended by this question in most cases). Not everyone wants to be out and some people in they were out would lose jobs, friends, families, and even children.

Were you a born vampire, or when did you become one/get turned....were you turned?I was born, but my wakening was weird, it came in waves or increments, some at age 5, some in the teen years and fully in my 20's

Why do you think children of vampires have such a hard time with the side affects and why do you think that some survive very well (I have my own ideas on this since I am a Mom, but I want to know yours). Do you think that if a vampire impregnated a regular human being that the child would have an easier time adjusting?I think the ones who have a hard time is because there fighting there vampire nature, the ones who survive well embrace what they are and find others to help them. No, Think they would have all the same problems and feelings as they awaken.

As a vampire do you notice sharper senses? Keener smell (for all things, not just blood), hearing, sight, etc.? Yes, smells are keener, hearing is sharper, and eyes are photosensitive to some bright lights and sunlight.

I have read that some can be both psychic and sanguinarian? What do you think? There are some, energy is energy weather you get it from blood or regular energy

Do you believe that some are chosen? Do you have to be chosen? What happens to those who find a way to turn themselves? ( I personally take issue wit chosen....I am thinking chosen in the same sense as the difference between Catholics and Protestants [for Catholics, all can be saved, and for Protestants, you have to be chosen to be saved, and it was predetermined....).Hello, there are no chosen anything in any way of live or religion, in a predetermined way you chose yourself, you have free will. you may have the vampire gene and never go through awakening and just go on living like you do, making the choses you want. If you know your vampire then you chose to fight it or embrace it. Yes, you can awaken yourself. but this is a hard thing to do. Most vampires get help with awakening. it's easier. I went the hard way, slowly awakening myself. Because some family member don't know what they are and one would let me meet her friends. That's all I can tell you. Watch what you ask and to who, not all of us are good or willing to let you ask questions about us or our commuity.and no one will out others thetas there chose only to make.

Visit glad.com/gladtogive to see how some lovin' from your oven can help out Cookies for Kids' Cancer. Basic Cookie DoughMakes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, room temperature1-cup sugar1 large egg3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract1. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, with an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well combined. 2. With the mixer on low speed, beat in the flour mixture until just combined. Tear off 2 sheets of waxed paper, each about 12-inches. Spoon half the dough lengthwise down the center of each sheet of paper forming a strip about 8 inches long. With your hands, roll each strip into a log about 2 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. Wrap the logs up in the paper. 3. Freeze several hours until firm or freeze up to 3 months4. To bake: preheat oven to 400. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Unwrap frozen dough and with a sharp knife, slice 1/4-inch thick. Bake until golden around the edges, rotating baking sheets from top to bottom and front to back. With a wide, thin metal spatula, remove from baking sheets to wire rack to cool completely.1. Ginger Cookies: Add 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger and 1/8 teaspoon dry mustard powder to flour mixture. Beat 2 tablespoons finely chopped crystallized ginger in to mixture when adding egg.2. Peanut Cookies: Grind enough peanuts to make 1/3 cup finely ground. Add 1/8 teaspoon almond extract when adding vanilla. Fold in 1/3 cup sliced almonds after adding flour.4. Add 2 tablespoons peanut butter. Fold in 3 tablespoons peanut butter chips when adding flour mixture.11. Chill butter until firm then proceed with recipe as directed.12. Toasted Coconut: Toast 1 cup of angel-flake coconut (the sweetened kind you get in the supermarket in bags) until golden brown. Grind a little more than half to get 1/3 cup ground and replace 1/3 cup of the flour with the ground coconut. Fold the remaining coconut in when adding the egg.13. They must be a pretty backward community. I would suggest they come to New England and visit Salem, Massachusetts, the home of the witch trials, etc. We have been here for thousands of years and not even Christianity can eradicate us. We exist and they had better get used to it.

For many of us, that is found through the wisdom of God, Buddha or The Divine. For a large number of our members, it is found through Pagan Gods and Goddesses, while still others find their truth through examining life and the experience we all have. All of these paths and more are welcome and explored. We value all the viewpoints of our ministers and congregation, however varied and controversial they might be. We believe in religious freedom, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. We welcome any who seek truth, wisdom and tolerance. We use teaching material from a variety of sources, as wisdom is found in many places and people each hear it in different ways. *Please note that we are in the process of applying for our 501 and articles of incorporation.

. T'was the Evening of Samhainby Cather Steinkamp'Twas the evening of Samhain, and all through the place,Were pagans preparing the ritual space. The candles were set in the corners with care,in hopes that the Watchtowers soon would be there. We all had our robes on (as is habitual)and had just settled down and were starting our ritualwhen out on the porch there arose such a chorusthat we went to the door, and waiting there for uswere children in costumes of various kindswith visions of chocolate bright in their minds. In all of our ed tings, we'd almost forgot, but we had purchased candy (we'd purchased a LOT),And so, as they flocked from all over the street, they all got some chocolate or something else sweet. We didn't think twice of delaying our rite,Kids just don't have this much fun every night. For hours they came, with the time-honored schtickOf giving a choice: a treat or a trick. As is proper, the parents were there for the games,Watching the children and calling their names."On Vader, On Leia,On Dexter and DeeDee,On Xena, on Buffy,Casper and Tweety! To the block of apartmentson the neighboring road; You'll get so much candy, you'll have to be TOWED!"The volume of children eventually dropped, and as it grew darker, it finally stopped. But as we prepared to return to our rite,One child more stepped out of the night. She couldn't have been more than twelve or thirteen. Her hair was deep red, and her robe, forest greenwith a simple gold cord tying off at the waist. She'd a staff in her hand and a smile on her face.No make-up, nor mask, or accompanying kitsch,so we asked who she was; she replied "I'm a witch. And no, I don't fly through the sky on my broom;I only use that thing for cleaning my room.My magical powers aren't really that neat,But I won't threaten tricks; I'll just ask for a treat."We found it refreshing, so we gave incense cones,A candle, a crystal, a few other stones,And the rest of the candy (which might fill a van). She turned to her father (a man dressed as Pan)And laughed, "Yes, I know, Dad, it's past time for bed,"And started to leave, but she first turned and said"I'm sorry for further delaying your rite.Blessed Samhain to all, and a magical night."

Almost two years ago, I attended a state-run critical incident response training event over on the Peninsula along with a plethora of Christian chaplains. All of us were offered continuing education credits that qualified us to counsel people in times of deep crisis. An issue of concern arose for me when this government-funded group repeatedly promoted one religion; exclusively. I realized, after hearing many public prayers to a deity that not even the Jews acknowledge, that many citizens in our communities would not feel comforted by having a devout Christian attempting to counsel them; especially not if they were already enduring some serious environmental crisis. (Indigenous cultures, for one example, have historically been grossly oppressed by the Christian communities.) Naturally, I asked the trainers why there was no representation (on this state level) from other religious communities. There were no Jewish leaders, nobody from the Muslim faith. No Atheists or agnostics. As far as I could tell (and classroom discussion seemed to confirm this) I represented the only alternative religion there. The Christian chaplains obviously saw no issue with this -- not even after I explained that the communities we live in and serve are very diverse. Disregarding anything I had to say on the topic, the chaplains kept insisting they were open-minded enough to counsel anybody. Meanwhile, they kept offering up their public prayers and one particularly vocal chaplain cornered me at break time. He told me a story I will never forget. Seems he had met a Wiccan {just once}! His story droned on to sadly explain that the witch refused to give him entry into her house when he responded to an emergency call that he had heard over the fire station's radio. "I'm sorry you had a negative experience," I admitted, sincerely. Then the chaplain went on to explain that the woman was a total nut-job who had just killed her mother. {That story clearly defined what he thought about Pagans.} While many different stories of Christian ministers who molest children came to my mind, I bit my tongue and excused myself from divulging such undesirable information. After all, it would not have helped me make friends in that environment. Meanwhile, my experiences were to the point where I realized that I had better start a revolution. That's why I began making contact with the governing powers that be and learned they would welcome outside groups with open arms. I’m hoping, desperately, that we as Pagans can work together as one unit in this regard. To form a phone tree, an email broadcast effort perhaps – just get better connected with one another to show we really do care about our community. This really is a powerful opportunity to put our Pagan community in the municipal limelight. This Thursday is the first opportunity that’s arisen for showing up as a group. This is why I began sending out announcements to my community a few weeks ago. I'm asking for participation in a collective effort. I hope, if you cannot attend Thursday’s meeting, that you will at least send me your contact information so you can be called and made aware of future opportunities to serve our communities during times of crisis. Please let me know if you would like to be added to that list. United we will change the way we are seen by local governments. Divided we will falter and fail. Lets network and get better connected. Please feel free to forward this message to any party you feel would benefit from the sharing. NOTE: If you cannot attend Thursday but want to be added to a Pagan Emergency Response list, please send that information to me at SunTiger@usa.com. MEETING INFORMATION WHAT: a meeting entitled "How Can You Help: Preparing for the Upcoming Flood Season" HOSTED BY: the City of Auburn & the White River Valley Community organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) WHEN: Thursday, October 22 from 4-6 PM WHERE: Auburn City Hall, City Council Chambers, 25 W Main St. *Note: I’ve reserved spots for our forming group. YOU are invited. * I had hoped we would be able to meet at a coffee house prior to the event but now I’m picking up another Pagan who lives in Burien so I will just stand outside City Hall about ten minutes before the meeting begins. I hope we can meet there; in front. Richest blessings, ~ SunTiger

Ozark Avalon is looking for compatable groups that would like to rent our 160 acre land in central Missouri for their event. We offer beautiful level camping and we have hosted groups of up to 800 persons (Interfuse) but will also host much smaller gatherings. Larger groups or those wishing to pay an extra fee can arrange exclusive events. All groups are required to leave no trace and will get a deposit back after the site is cleaned.

Our site offers plenty of level camping, wooded camping, a small pool and 3 acre lake. A solar assisted, gas heated shower facility that supplies almost endless hot showers and compost toilets. Larger groups may need to order additional port-a- pots.

We also have a commercial style kitchen that can be leased as part of the package if your group needs this, and have some indoor space as well in our farmhouse retreat center if you have physically challenged or non-campers in your group. We are currently working on our 2010 schedule so get in touch with us right away if you are interested in a particular date.

Blessed Be,
