Wal-Mart Begins Charging for Grocery Bags in California
Posted Jan 13th 2010 3:30PM by Brian White

Wal-Mart (WMT) is either looking to make an impact on the environment or cut more expenses -- probably both. The world's largest retailer is now going to charge its customers in parts of California for shopping bags. No, not the thin plastic ones, but the reusable kind. The standard white plastic bag is going away completely.

Is this a good idea? That is, charge for the temporary storage containers that house goods customers just bought? Wal-Mart apparently wants to force customers to become eco-friendly, although any customer -- after paying 15 cents for a reusable, washable bag -- can throw them away. Want a larger shopping bag? 50 cents, please.

Will this go over across Wal-Mart's national network of stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets? Who know -- but starting something so seemingly insignificant in California makes sense given much of the state's eco-liberalism.

The impacts of Wal-Mart getting away from disposable plastic bags alone would be huge. The move to charging customers for the replacement is a tad bit iffy, but adding a dollar or two to s shopping tab (once per five shopping trips, perhaps) is not that wallet-bending. Or, is it?

Subject: Solar eclipse in Capricorn...

The astrological energy from January 13-15 is almost epic. On the 13th, Saturn turns retrograde in Libra; two days later, there is an annual solar eclipse of the Sun at the new Moon of Capricorn. This eclipse is in conjunction with Venus, on the very same day Mercury turns direct after several weeks of retrograde motion. Globally, this transit should be beneficient and pleasurable, releasing built-up tension and leading toward a brand new beginning for the world.

On a more personal level, this solar eclipse can have a major effect on our personal lives when it occurs in conjunction with one of our natal planets -- especially our natal Sun, Moon, ruling planet or the Moon's nodes, ascendant, mid heaven. Where the eclipse falls in one's chart is significant, as the energies expressed by its house placement will show areas of life affected by this eclipse's implied new beginnings.

This eclipse has love karma written all over it! Love and partnerships are serious business right now! If you have it, how do you keep it? If you don't have it, how do you get it? How do you deal with the reality that both you and your partner are human?

The new Moon is also time to set an intention. Venus is the ruler of the new Moon, while Saturn is in Libra. Mercury turns direct later the same day, but Mars is still retrograde and Mercury is in Capricorn, so expect things to be slow for a while.

What Cleopatra's Eye Makeup Was Good For Health
Cleopatra's Eye Makeup Had Medical Benefits Too
Sphere (Jan. 12) -- It seems the ancient Egyptians knew a lot more than we already give them credit for. And that includes more down-to-earth things than how to build the Great Pyramids or preserve bodies for thousands of years.

It turns out that the heavy eye makeup worn by Egyptians such as Cleopatra probably had medical as well as aesthetic benefits, because of an ingredient that most, if not all, women today would run from.

French research suggests that at very low levels, lead salts contained in the ancient makeup produce nitrous oxide, which, scientists today have come to realize, boosts the immune system to fight off bacteria that can cause eye infection.

"According to ancient Egyptian manuscripts, these were essential remedies for treating eye illness and skin ailments,'' said the chief researcher, Philippe Walter, in an abstract of the research published in the journal Analytical Chemistry. "This conclusion seems amazing because today we focus only on the well-recognized toxicity of lead salts.''

The makeup used by ancient Egyptians took up to a month to make, and today it would be considered a health hazard because of its lead content.

But Walter explained that "owing to the biological role" of nitrogen monoxide "in stimulating nonspecific immunological defenses, one may argue that these lead compounds were deliberately manufactured and used in ancient Egyptian formulations to prevent and treat eye illnesses by promoting the action of immune cells."

He said the research was based on chemical analysis of cosmetics samples found in Egyptians tombs "and the reconstitution of ancient recipes as reported by Greco-Roman authors."

The analysis carried out by scientists from the Louvre museum in Paris and the French Center for Scientific Research found that in very low doses, lead could actually have a positive effect.

"We knew ancient Greeks and Romans, too, had noted the makeup had medicinal properties, but wanted to determine exactly how," Walter said.

The researchers used a tiny electrode, one-tenth the thickness of a human hair, to look at the effect on a single cell of lead chloride salt synthesized by the Egyptians.

Their research may have been hanging by a hair, but it opened up secrets that the women of ancient Egypt had known for a long time and were more than pleased, apparently, to use.

By-laws
of Star Coven of Wiccan

1.1 [The Coven] is a Wiccan coven which derives its power from the diversity and strength of each individual member, and exists to provide for its members a safe space in which to express their spirituality.

1.2 The Coven exists as an open forum for the members to share knowledge, wisdom, and ideas.

1.3 In all administrative matters, The Coven is egalitarian and reaches decisions by consensus of the members.

1.3.1 The founding High Priestess will facilitate decision making sessions/meetings. Everyone who is a member of the coven shall act as an advisor. If Consensus cannot be quickly achieved, the High Priestess will make the final decision.

1.3.2 In an emergency situation, the High Priestess may make a decision without council, or with council as she chooses. Emergency decisions made by the High Priestess without council will be brought to the coven at a later date with the option for approval or adjustment.

1.4 In all matters of spiritual training, a three degree system is honored and employed.

1.5 The Coven agrees to follow a common body of laws which protect the rights and well being of the coven as a whole and the individuals that compose it. The Laws apply equally to all, and is applied equally to all, regardless of position or degree.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

2.1 FORMATION

2.1.1 The core group will be 4 individuals who hold offices within the corporate structure.

2.1.2 Corporate titles for these individuals are "TRUSTEE".

2.1.3 The Trustees are responsible for the execution of all corporate needs and management of fiscal responsibilities of The Coven.

2.1.4 The Trustees, as a group, bestow legal clergy rights and privileges on members of sufficient rank and merit.

2.1.5 The Trustees, as a group, may bestow these same clergy rights on a limited basis to those of merit but who have not yet gained the rank necessary to carry them indefinitely.

2.2 TERM OF OFFICE

2.2.1 The Trustees are set at the formation of this body and there is no set term of office.

2.2.2 The position of Trustee conveys a great deal of responsibility and may require more time than can be given by an individual. For this reason, a Trustee who finds her/himself without sufficient time and/or energy to fulfill his/her position may take a hiatus of up to six months and still retain his/her position as Trustee.

2.2.2.1 If a trustee takes a hiatus, the membership may choose from among the volunteers from the membership one of merit to fill the role and responsibilities of the missing Trustee, on the understanding that it is only a temporary position. If the remaining Trustees can effectively handle the work of the missing Trustee, they do not need to seek a replacement for the one on hiatus.

2.2.2.2 If after six months, the missing Trustee still feels unable to fulfill his/her responsibility as Trustee, s/he will no longer be considered a Trustee and may be replaced.

2.2.2.3 Elections will then be held to elect a new Trustee from among the membership. This new Trustee will have the same rights and responsibilities as the other Trustees, including no set term of office.

2.3 REMOVAL OF A TRUSTEE

2.3.1 If the Trustee has so violated the trust of the membership as to make some or all uncomfortable with the Trustee retaining their position, any of the membership may make a Motion to Recall. Motion to recall cannot be made until dispute resolution has been attempted.

2.3.2 If such a motion is made, a meeting date must be set and communicated to all members at least 1 week prior to the meeting date. This is necessary as all members are encouraged to participate.

2.3.3 At least 67% of the membership must be present (in person or by written proxy) at the time of the vote.

2.3.4 To recall a Trustee at least 60% of those present must agree by means of their vote to remove the Trustee. If less than 60% vote for the recall, the Trustee maintains his/her position, but is urged to look at the concerns of the membership and do her/his utmost to address the concerns and regain good faith.

2.3.5 Removal or resignation from the Board of Trustees in no way affects their status as members of The Coven.

2.4 ADDITIONAL TRUSTEES

2.4.1 If at some point the Trustees determine that there is a need for additional Trustees to meet the functional needs of the Board of Trustees, they may call for volunteers from within the membership to fill the new vacancy(ies).

2.4.2 The consensually accepted Trustee(s) have the same rights and responsibilities as the standing Trustees, including no set term of office.

2.5 REMOVAL OF ADDITIONAL TRUSTEE POSITION(S)

2.5.1 If it comes to pass that an established Trustee position goes vacant, either due to lack of membership or lack of interest, for a period of nine months or more, that position is removed from the structure and can only be reinstated by means outlined previously.

THE SECRETARY

3.1 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SECRETARY

3.1.1 Every group will inevitably receive correspondence and requests for classes. For this reason, there needs to be a person who is charged with answering correspondence and questions about the group, and chairing meetings.

3.1.2 The Secretary represents The Coven to all outsiders and is responsible for responding to all inquiries, written or otherwise. The secretary chairs all meetings, and takes notes at meetings.

3.1.3 Though not required, it is strongly urged that the Secretary periodically check in with the membership to ensure that they are adequately representing The Coven and not just their own opinions.

3.1.4 The term of office shall be a period of twelve months beginning at or around the Sabbat of Spring Equinox (March 21st). One person cannot hold the position for more than two consecutive terms.

3.1.5 The Secretary is a volunteer position answering to the membership and the Secretary can also hold the position of Trustee concurrently, but the Secretary does not need to be a Trustee.

3.1.6 Volunteers should be sought by the Trustees at the annual meeting at or around Imbolc (Feb 2nd).

3.1.7 If more than one member volunteers for a given term, the volunteers will work out between themselves who will serve the next term with the remaining volunteers being pre-assigned for subsequent terms.

3.1.8 If the volunteers are unable to work out an amenable solution, the membership will vote for their choice of Secretary with a simple majority determining the appointee.

3.1.9 Once the Secretary for the coming term has been determined, the new Secretary must confer with the current Secretary in order to be briefed on current practices and pending needs of the position. Any significant changes desired by the new Secretary must be brought for approval to the Trustees.

3.1.10 The Secretary will keep on file copies of all incoming or outgoing correspondence, and will report significant correspondence at business meetings.

3.1.11 The business files, and all correspondence are property of the Coven.

3.2 REMOVAL OF THE SECRETARY

3.2.1 If the Secretary has so violated the trust of the membership as to make some or all uncomfortable with the Secretary retaining his/her position, any of the membership may make a Motion to Recall. Motion to recall can only be cannot be made until disputes resolution has been attempted.

3.2.2 If such a motion is made, a time and date for the meeting to vote on the motion is set. All members must be notified at least 1 week in advance of the meeting.

3.2.3 At the time of the meeting, at least 67% of the membership must be present, either in person or by written proxy.

3.2.4 To recall the Secretary, a simple majority of those present must agree by means of their vote to remove the Secretary. If the majority does not vote to recall the Secretary, the Secretary retains his/her position, but is urged to look at the concerns of the membership and do her/his utmost to address their concerns and regain their faith.

3.2.5 Removal or resignation of the Secretary in no way effects their status as members of The Coven.

Have a magical week, and watch for Friday's Special Edition, where we'll talk about how to live a magical life every day!

FedEx Driver Drops Off Extra Stuff
Trish Reynolds is a Wiccan high priestess and author who lives in Mt. Olive, New Jersey (not Wisconsin, as I had erroneously typed before). Back in December, she watched as a Federal Express driver dropped off a package for her neighbor. On his way back to his truck, the driver noticed a "Goddess Bless America" sticker on Reynolds' car. That's when he got a Chick tract out of his truck and...Read More

Child Sacrifice on the Rise in Uganda
Thanks to Lesley, Shivam, and several others who forwarded me this chilling article from the BBC. A recent investigation into the ritual killings of children reveals that the practice may be far common than anyone realized. Ugandan witch doctors say that there is a belief that child sacrifice can bring prosperity. I'll warn you ahead of time, the article is a disturbing one to...Read More

Increase your productivity for the New Year
Barbara Bartlein

A study of a thousand business people reported that 89% take work home, 65% work more than one weekend a month and 53% spend less than two hours a week looking after their children. Completed by the American Management Association, the study also revealed that more than 68% of the survey respondents felt at least somewhat more overwhelmed at work than they did two years ago.

Are you looking for more time in your life to do the things you really want? We can't create more time, but by using time more effectively, you can streamline work and responsibilities. Here are some ideas for the New Year:

Observe yourself. The first step in time management is to know how you currently spend your time. Log all the hours and what you are doing for one week. You will quickly discover time that is lost with inefficiencies, interruptions, and lack of planning. Be especially wary of the great time waster - - television (and of course, the Internet). Discipline yourself to make better choices.
Go to bed. According to the 2005 Sleep in American Poll, approximately half of American workers report that lack of sleep regularly affects their performance on the job and at home. Adults in the U.S. report that they receive, on average, 6.9 hours of sleep each night. The recommended amount is 7.5 to 8.5 hours for a healthy adult. Don't skimp on sleep to get everything done. You may be more productive by sleeping that extra hour
Have a "don't do" list. Be clear on what things you don't want to do or interfere with your efficiency. I am often asked to lunch by people who want to "network." While I enjoy meeting new people, I have found this to be an enormous waste of time with little benefit to either party. I now refuse these requests and invite them instead to join me at a larger networking event.
Go paperless. You have the technology, so use it. Eliminate the paper trails, files, and copies. Use the computer to put your documents into files and organize your projects. At least twice a year, take a few hours to go through files and delete what isn't being used.
Make e-mail the communication of choice. Eliminate as many phone calls as possible. Integrate voicemails and faxes into your e-mail system to avoid wasting time on other technology.
Use e-mail filtering. This will keep the amount of e-mails at an acceptable level. Tools like "in-box rules" and search folders can mark and group messages based on content and importance.
Ignore new e-mails. It's fine to have the e-mail notification icon on your toolbar but discipline yourself to ignore it. Each time you switch between screens to check the latest incoming mail; you lose your flow and your productivity. Rather open your mail no more than once per hour.
Learn the computer programs. Most of us use less than 10% of the capacity of the programs we have installed on our computers. Yet, you can save time by using macros and other tools. Don't have time to sign up for a course? Download a free list of shortcuts from Microsoft.
Use a computerized contact management system. There are a number of great ones available such as ACT. Many also can integrate into your palm pilot for scheduling, contact, info, etc. It's a great way to keep track of key customer, contacts or even your Holiday list.
Set short deadlines. Long deadlines are the fodder for procrastination. Most of us wait until we are under the gun and then work like crazy to complete the project. Create a deadline system for yourself that includes daily goals even if it is only part of a project.
Understand who does the typing. Consulting with large corporations, I am often amazed that they try to save money by eliminating support staff. How many hours of time are wasted by folks who are typing with two fingers? Either learn to type or hire someone who does. This holds true for other projects too. If there is someone who can do it better, faster, and more efficient than you, outsource the work.
Systemize everything you can. From scheduling to grocery shopping, calendars to cleaning, create a system. Systems turn into habits and organized habits increase efficiency.
Eliminate everything from your schedule that does not add value. Too often reports, measurements and routine tasks are of little benefit and interfere with other projects. There is an old Scottish proverb: "Weighing sheep won't make them any fatter." Measurements have their place but periodically evaluate if they are still needed.
Implement these ideas to increase your productivity for 2010. Then take a nice vacation.

We had a good night at Bell's place trying out a few songs for the season. If you check the Files section and download the "ImbolcSongs.rtf" file, this file will show the songs we have tried and feel would be good for the group to get into the season. To address apprehension, the group parts will be tried out before the songs get rolling. The file has the possible breakouts, but there will be some fine-tuning so it will all come together and gel with the group. These songs have the benefit of sounding somewhat conventional when heard across Bell's neighborhood...

The first one shown is Neil Young's Light a Candle-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tam6btvqQfc
The look we had at this tonight was that elements of the Bell, 2 Scott's and Andrew choir would do the ballad parts and the group (after a runthrough) would do the chorus parts and end. This saves having the whole assemblage have to practice the whole song. It will work out when we are in person...

The next one is a Mother Goddess song (Stonehenge) by Kellianna-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZNvW6KJhMU
The arrangement will be different when we do this in the group. Not only will it be done by more people, but the layering tracks in the YouTube clip will be replaced by doing the pieces in a certain sequence. Again, if it works the way it did tonight, it should all come together well and push us toward a spirit of growth and renewal.

Dear Charlene,

If you're struggling with your job search and feel you've exhausted every lead provided by your local network, it may be time for you to broaden your horizons. The world is a big place filled with lots of opportunities; why would you limit your career options to a single city? Of course, when we suggest that you relocate to find work, we're not suggesting that you just pack a duffel bag and set off into the great unknown. Relocating to find work demands careful planning, especially if you have a family. These six steps will aid you in your long-distance job search as you contemplate a new life abroad.

1- Research your target locations

The first thing you need to do before you relocate to find work is figure out what areas best fit your personal and professional needs. For example, a rural town known for its farming community may not be the best target location for a software engineer who's allergic to hay. Climate, culture and cost of living are all important factors to consider, and there are a number of online resources, such as AM's destination archive, that can aid you in your research. You should also seek counsel from your contacts abroad, if only to let them know you're looking to relocate to find work.

2- Determine your job opportunities

Once you've selected a few locations and advised your extended network that you're willing to relocate to find work, assemble a list of job prospects, making sure to include recruiting agencies and companies with branches near you. You can get this information online by visiting area-specific job-search websites or by searching through your target city's virtual phone book. Don't be shy about cold-calling potential employers to see if they have an opening. You can even offer to do a preliminary phone interview to spare yourself an unnecessary trip.

3- Investigate the legal requirements

Should you land a position overseas, it's imperative that you acquire all the necessary permits and visas before your official date of employment. That's why you should always start the legal process as early as possible when you relocate to find work. Determine every document and authorization you'll need to start a new job in your target location, and draw up the paperwork in advance. Keep in mind, however, that you may not be able to complete this task until an employer has made you an official offer.
4- Establish a budget and timetable

If you followed our previous tips on how to relocate to find work, you should have all the information required to establish a comprehensive strategy for your job hunt. Your strategy will largely deal with determining when you hope to move and how much money you can set aside for travel expenses, security deposits, unforeseen complications, and of course, long-distance communication. Keep in mind that it may take you longer than you expect to secure a position, so make sure you can afford your rent or mortgage in both your old and new locations if need be.

5- Plan an initial recon trip

Don't rely solely on long-distance research to select your new location. There's only so much you can learn through internet articles and third-party accounts. That's why it's important to visit your target city at least once before you relocate to find work. You need to make sure the area suits your personal needs as well as your professional ones, so try to get a sense of the culture, and make a point of checking out housing. You should also schedule your trip to coincide with a local career fair if you can, and try to fit in a few job interviews.

6- Plan a second logistics trip

At this point, you should be confident of where you want to relocate to find work. The purpose of this second expedition is to finalize any remaining details regarding the logistics of your move and to secure a worthy job offer. As such, you should contact every employer and recruiter on your list of prospects and set up as many formal interviews as possible in order to spare yourself multiple trips. Don't be afraid to ask whether the company is willing to pay for your travel expenses, but make it clear that you're making an inquiry, not a request.

Broadening your career horizons

These six tips will help you relocate to find work. However, you should keep in mind that long-distance job hunts are usually uphill battles. Employers are often reluctant to even consider candidates from out of town because of their limited availability for job interviews and the cost of their eventual relocation, should they be selected. That's why it's important that you remain flexible in your objectives. Don't dismiss any offer before giving it careful consideration, and always keep your options open. You're about to start a new life, after all.

Hello Bell,

I was wondering is there anything we should bring if we show up such as a drum? Or is our voice and sparkling personality enough?

Thanks,

Emotional vampires: Bite back
Posted By JOANNE RICHARD
Posted 2 months ago

Your life suck?

Don't be surprised if you're a victim of emotional vampires -- people who suck up all your positive energy.

Vampires just don't come out in the night or at Halloween -- seems they rule 24/7.

They lurk everywhere and wear many different disguises, says Dr. Judith Orloff, from needy relatives to workplace bullies.

There's the belittling boss, gossipy co-workers, nit-picking spouse, confrontational mother-in-law, drama-queen sister, controlling father-in-law -- the energy-sucking clan goes on.

According to Orloff, these beasts that burden go in for the kill by stirring up your emotions, pushing your buttons and lowering our resistances.

"They wreak havoc with our health

by adding stress to our lives," says Orloff.

"For instance, if a 'victim' calls you after a long days work complaining for two hours, you end up exhausted when you can be taking care of yourself."

Intentionally or not, these emotional leeches often make us feel depressed, defensive, angry and wiped out, says Orloff, author ofEmotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life(Harmony Books).

Proper self defence strategies are essential, otherwise unhealthy behaviours and symptoms may surface, including overeating, isolation, mood swings, or feeling fatigued.

These difficult people are often attracted to people with big hearts who don't know how to set boundaries, says Orloff, of www.drjudithorloff.com.Also, often victimized are those with low self esteem who can't defend themselves or have a hard time saying "no."

"No" is a complete sentence, she adds.

"You can run but you cannot hide from an emotional vampire," says psychotherapist Deborah Mecklinger, adding that they may appear as a

harmless Cinderella, Snow

White or even Casper the Friendly Ghost, "but a blood-sucking vampire is a blood

sucking vampire," so don't be

fooled. "Once

recognized, deal with the vampire head on, before they sink their teeth into

you."

Practice setting limits

until you can do it with ease, Mecklinger suggests. Practice on a good-natured "Snow White" in your life.

"Don't be his or her next victim. Don't sleep through the ravages of the vampire. Be alert; use your words -- especially the littlest one you know. Say 'no' to the emotional vampires," says Mecklinger, of walkthetalkcoaching.com.

"Be a broken record--repeat 'no' until they stop or go away. They will find their next victim," she says, adding that they look for weaknesses in their victims to prey upon and exploit.

Meanwhile, Orloff adds that it's important to become emotionally aware since we all have some tendencies to suck up people's energy.

"The solution is always to own up to where you're emotionally stuck and change the related behaviour. Emotional freedom is about developing awareness of ourselves and shifting out of negative patterns quickly.

"For instance, if you are just complaining and negative, take small doable action steps to turn the situation around. Pay off $25 on your credit card.

Ask your boss for projects that are stimulating. Talk to your mate about a behaviour that is irritating you.

"Once you take action, you can shift out of emotional vampire patterns."

FIVE that bite

Here are five types of emotional vampires you'll likely encounter, according to Dr. Judith Orloff's bookEmotional Freedom, and how to fend them off:

TYPE 1:The Narcissist-- look out for this self-important, attention hogging vampire. Often charming until her guru status is threatened.

Self-defence tips: Enjoy her good qualities, but keep your expectations realistic. To get her co-operation, show how your request satisfies her self-interest.

TYPE 2:The Victim--This vampire thinks the world is against him, and demands that others rescue him.

Self-defence tips: Limit your interactions, and don't get involved in his self-pity.

TYPE 3:The Controller --This dominating vampire is judgmental, has an opinion about everything and thinks he/she knows what's best for you.

Self-defence tips: Speak up and be confident. Don't get caught up in bickering. Assert your needs, and then agree to disagree.

TYPE 4:The Criticizer--This vampire feels qualified to judge and belittle, and bolster his own ego by making you feel small and ashamed.

Self-defence tips: Don't take what's said personally or get defensive. Address a misplaced criticism directly. Express appreciation for what's useful. Bounce back with a massive dose of loving-kindness.

TYPE 5:The Splitter--This vampire may treat you like his BFF one day, and then mercilessly attack you the next; a threatening rageaholic who revels in keeping others on an emotional rollercoaster.

Self-defence tips: Establish boundaries and be solution-oriented. Avoid skirmishes, refuse to take sides, and avoid eye contact when he/she's raging at you.

Dealing with an emotional vampire Dogged by a vampire?

Dr. Judith Orloff recommends these dos and don'ts:

Do

* Take a breath to centre yourself

* Stay calm and matter-of-fact instead of taking their bait

* Listen to intuitions signaling danger, i. e. a bad feeling in your gut

* Pause and develop a plan for handling the situation before you react

* Communicate clearly, firmly and with a neutral tone when setting limits

Don't

* Panic

* Talk yourself out of your intuitions or call yourself neurotic

* Blurt out something you'll regret later

* Pick a fight

* Overeat to medicate stress

Are you infected? Signs that you're an energy-sucking leech:

* People avoid you

* You're self-obsessed, critical, controlling, negative, you gossip or bad mouth people

* You become a drama queen or king

* You become a chronic talker who doesn't let other people get a word in edgewise

* You make friends your "therapist" and overwhelm them with your issues/problems

I have to tel you I love U2 and Bono is a guru!
Bono's Lyrics All About God, Says Vatican

We all knew Bono existed on a higher plane to the rest of us mere mortals. After all, what other explanation can there be for a 49-year-old man with a predilection for cowboy hats and wearing sunglasses indoors being given a serious hearing by so many of the world's political and religious leaders?

But now it seems the spiritual qualities of U2's recorded output have been given the thumbs up by the Pope himself.(Well, by a couple of degrees of separation, at least).

L'Osservatore Romano, the semi-official newspaper of the Vatican, has published an article vouching for the myriad Christian themes in Bono's lyrics. The piece quotes Italian music critic Andrea Morandi arguing that, while the biblical allusions in early U2 albums like 'Boy' and 'October' are well known, references to religion can be found in almost every tune by the Irish rockers, right up to their most recent work.

Thus we can follow Bono's faith from the dogmatism of '40' from 'War' (which rewrites Psalm 40) and 'October''s 'Gloria' (with its Latin chorus) through the uncertainty found in the albums 'Zooropa' and 'Pop' ("full of discussions with God", according to Morandi), right up to the born again reaffirmation of 'Unknown Caller' (Morandi: 'Where the stranger who calls you is the God who saves') from 'No Line on the Horizon'.

'Beautiful Day' , apparently, is about much more than it being a beautiful day. Still, with the Almighty apparently pushing Bono's pen, at least we know who to blame for this particular lyrical atrocity: "A mole / living in a hole / digging up my soul / going down / excavation / I and I / in the sky / you make me feel like I can fly / so high / elevation."

Let us pray.

L'Osservatore, from time to time, shows us why it is a "semi-official" paper. This story, along with a previous one which claimed that the animated T.V. show The Simpsons contains significant philosophical teachings are clear examples of thier semi-adherance to the true teachings of the Church.

An endorsement from the largest religion in the world should be the kiss of death to a supposedly rebelious, rock band. The Pope had to declare to the bishops that "Bono is God" before the singer would accept his praise.

U2 is one of the greatest bands ever! Bono has said himself that God influences his lyrics. He has also said he has an ego. Everybody needs to understand the words to the songs. U2 writes "superficially" for a reason. The ones who wish to understand the real meaning behind the songs, actually have to think on a deeper level. The ones who are critical of everything Bono does, seem to me are quite jealous! Keep it up U2! You've made a real difference!

U2 Tell the Story Behind 'The Unforgettable Fire' -- Exclusive Video

With the recent 25th anniversary special edition reissue of 1984's 'The Unforgettable Fire,' U2 are stepping back to remember the making of the album. Bono and company employed producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to help them experiment musically, and while it seemed like an unlikely combination then, their work on 'The Unforgettable Fire' led to a creative breakthrough for the band. It also helped to deliver the lead single 'Pride (In the Name of Love),' which became U2's biggest hit at the time.

In the exclusive interview clip after the jump, U2 discuss Eno, Lanois and Ireland's Slane Castle, where the album was initially recorded. Watch the video to find out how the experience "deconstructed U2" and what the band learned from it.

Bono Takes on File Sharing, Medicine and More in New York Times Column

Bono has never been afraid to share his opinion. When the New York Times invited the U2 frontman to write a column for the newspaper's Editorials and Opinion page, he was definitely up for the challenge.

With the popularity for "best of" lists at the end of each year (or in 2009's case, decade), Bono decided to make up one of his own. "We have been stuffed full of them," he wrote. "Even in these self-restrained pages, it has been impossible to avoid the end-of-the-decade accountings of the 10 best such-and-suches and the 10 worst fill-in-the-blanks. And so, in the spirit of rockstar excess, I offer yet another."

But instead of looking at the past, Bono decided to whip out his crystal ball and create a list of 10 ideas that he feels "might make the next 10 years more interesting, healthy or civil." Tackling the US auto industry, the environment and even medical discoveries, Bono explains how each can improve while still admitting that he may not be the most knowledgeable about the topics, such as Dr. William Li's research on generating new blood vessels.

Although he gets political, the column also touches on his views of the music industry, especially file sharing. "A decade's worth of music file-sharing and swiping has made clear that people it hurts are the creators," Bono said. "In this case, the young fledgling songwriters who can't live off ticket and T-shirt sales like the least sympathetic among us -- and the people this reverse Robin Hooding benefits are rich service providers, whose swollen profits perfectly mirror the lost receipts of the music business."

Even though the idea of "Peace in the Middle East" may have been reduced to just a witty saying these days, Bono formulated the idea of using a yearly arts festival to bring Judaism, Christianity and Islam together and put host the first one in Jerusalem.

While Bono's optimism reaches new heights in the New York Times article, it'll be interesting to see if any of his ideas will turn into reality or another excuse to bash U2.
