Freshly ground pepper to taste
4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

Cooking Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 300°F.

2. Season beef with salt and pepper. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a Dutch oven or soup pot over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook, turning from time to time, until well browned on all sides, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

3. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons oil to the pot. Add onions, reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until softened and golden, 5 to 7 minutes. Add garlic and thyme; cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in coffee and vinegar; bring to a simmer. Return the beef to the pot and spoon some onions over it. Cover and transfer to the oven.

4. Braise the beef in the oven until fork-tender but not falling apart, 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Transfer beef to a cutting board, tent with foil and let rest for about 10 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, skim fat from the braising liquid; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the cornstarch mixture and cook, whisking, until the gravy thickens slightly, about 1 minute. Season with pepper. Carve the beef and serve with gravy.

Slow-Cooker Variation:

In Step 2, transfer the browned beef to a slow cooker. In Step 3, use just 1/2 cup coffee. Add the onion mixture to the slow cooker. In Step 4, cover and cook until beef is tender, 4 1/2 to 5 hours on High or 7 to 8 hours on Low. In Step 5, pour the liquid into a medium saucepan and continue as directed.

Ingredient Note: Although it is not the leanest cut of beef, chuck is still our choice for pot roast because it doesn't dry out during braising. You will find pockets of fat as you carve it, but they are easy to remove.

Dear Bell,

Thank you so much for not only your hospitality but your beautiful energy. Every time we have had the good fortune to spend time with SUPA it has been a worthwhile experience.

The evening was magical and the steady mist did nothing to detract from the event in my opinion. In some ways I think it added to it.

I feel remiss to speak on behalf of Ihanne but I do know he had a great time as well and you all warm the both of our hearts tremendously.

Thank you so much for loving and accepting us at face value and allowing us the opportunity to love you all back!

May the gods and godesses shine on you all!

Love and Light,

Sunset Dragonfly/Carin

(My husband Scott, gave me some feedback that I need to open up the candle lighting activity to include the participants just a little bit more. I'm so lucky to have such a fine partner who can help me be an even better hostess).

> The evening was perfect. It was so wonderful to celebrate with so many of my pagan friends. Thanks to everyone for making our Imbolc celebration the best celebration (so far) of 2010. Sagemoon has graciously volunteered to hostess Ostara this year(I bet it'll be the best supa Ostara celebration of 2010). Ostara is one of my very favorite holidays, the weather should be a little better and the activities are a lot of fun. So make sure that you look for the "Follow the Staff" announcements that are sure to be on the supa site.

Pagan Living

From Patti Wigington, Your Guide to Paganism / Wiccan.
This week has been a busy one for those of us following the story of the new Pagan worship circle at the Air Force Academy. Also this week, there's finally been an arrest in the deaths of three people who died in a sweat lodge, Wicca gets blamed for a guy killing and dismembering his girlfriend, and we're looking at whether or not a zoning issue is really a case of discrimination. Have a magical week, and watch for our special edition on Pagans & Christians this Friday!

Updates on Pagan Worship Circle

This week, we've had a number of stories concerning a Pagan worship circle at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. First, it was announced that a stone-ringed circle was in place for cadets and staff to use. Then word came out that a cross had been placed there in the night, and some fundamentalists worried that even having such a place would invite God's wrath. Finally the Naval Academy wants you to know that they won't have a circle of their own because no one has asked for it.

James Arthur Ray Arrested for Sedona Deaths

James Arthur Ray was arrested today at his attorney's office following a grand jury indictment charging him with three counts of manslaughter. Ray's arrest should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this blog -- we've been watching the story since October of last year, when three people died and many more fell ill in one of Ray's sweatlodge events in Sedona. Ray finally broke his silence last week when he spoke to... Read more

Clueless Prosecutors Blame Wicca for Murder

When I was in high school, I had a teacher who once told me that "a little bit of research can save you from looking like an idiot later on." I keep that in mind to this day, particularly when I read articles like this one from Everett, Washington, in which the ZOMG HE'S WICCAN angle is played up for sensationalism in a murder trial. Eric Christensen is charged with murdering and... Read more

Zoning Problem or Discrimination?

We've talked before about Pagans who have found themselves on the wrong end of a zoning case and who have wondered if it's really the zoning issue at play or their religion. For example, last year a Connecticut man asked for a variance on a home he was building, and neighbors flipped their lids because it might lead to OMG THERE'S A PAGAN CHURCH. In another case, DesMoines city officials asked a couple to remove Pagan symbols they'd painted on a fence, saying the symbols violated...Read More

What's Up With Love Magic?

This email is being brought to you by Hay House, Inc.
If you are unable to view this e-mail, please open the online version.

Hay House is delighted to release the highly-anticipated autobiography of Krishna Das. Coined "the chant master of American yoga" by the New York Times, Krishna shares his heart through music and chanting—his way of serving the Divine within himself and others.

Chants of a Lifetime: Searching For A Heart Of Gold offers an intimate collection of stories, teachings, and insights from Krishna Das. Since 1994, the sound of his voice singing traditional Indian chants with a Western flavor has brought the spiritual experience of chanting to audiences all over the world. He has previously shared some of his spiritual journey through talks and workshops, but now he offers a unique book-and-CD combination that explores his fascinating path and creates an opportunity for just about anyone to experience chanting in a unique and special way.

Chants of a Lifetime is about Krishna's search for true meaning within. He details his struggle with seeking outside himself for love and acceptance and the connection he found through chanting.

My life has been spent searching. Even before I knew what I was looking for, everything that has happened to me has led me into the presence of love, whether it was the physical presence of my guru or the presence of love deep within my own heart. No matter what my life may look like from the outside, on the inside it is a constant process of turning toward that place, of trying to come face-to-face with love.

The more I chant and share my path with seekers from so many different countries and cultures, the more I am being transformed myself. The purpose of this book is to illuminate the part of my path that surrounds and gives life to the chanting. I hope that by sharing the way I see my life, some of my experiences and some of the things I've learned while waiting for the door of my heart to swing open may be of help to those of you who are trying to open that same door.

Chanting alone is not my path. It is my main practice, but my life—and everything in it—is my path. I had the opportunity to spend several years in the presence of my guru, and I've been able to meet many saints, yogis, lamas, and instructors from different spiritual traditions. Without the blessing of these wonderful teachers and my experiences with them, I wouldn't have been able to pass through the darkness and despair that have often filled my life, and finally begun to learn how to be good to myself.

When we do kirtan, the practice of what in India is called "chanting the Divine Name" over the course of a few hours, we are letting go of our "stories" and offering ourselves into the moment over and over again. Chanting is a way of deepening the moment, of deepening our connection with ourselves, the world around us, and other beings. The Sanskrit chants that we sing—recognized for millennia as the Names of God—come from a place deep within each of us, so they have the power to draw us back within. If we go deep enough, we will all arrive at the same place, our deepest Being.

When you hear my story, maybe it will resonate in your heart because, even though all of us walk our different paths and live our different lives, we are all headed to the same place: our One Heart of Gold.
Chants of a Lifetime includes photos from Krishna Das's years in India and also from his life as a kirtan leader—and the CD that is offered exclusively in the book consists of a number of "private" chanting sessions with the author. Instead of being performances of chants for listening, the recordings make it seem as if Krishna Das himself is present for a one-on-one chanting session. The idea is for the listener to explore his or her own practice of chanting and develop a deepening connection with the entire chanting experience. Listen to an excerpt from the CD »

"Knowing the sweet power and depth of Krishna Das's singing, I was delighted to see, in this honest testament, how he got there. This book shows how Kirtan (singing the names of God) enters into our spiritual heart and then lights it up." —Ram Dass, the author of Be Here Now

"Krishna Das offers a gift of love—this candid, lively, and helpful guide to the path that opens the heart. Chants of a Lifetime is an instant spiritual classic." —Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence

"In Chants of a Lifetime, Krishna Das opens a door to a world of boundless love. This is a book about a real and transformational path—including all of life's challenges, inspiration, and uncertainty. It serves as an invitation to unwavering happiness." —Sharon Salzberg, the author of Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness

"Like a night of ecstatic chanting, this book throws open the doors of the heart. Krishna Das writes like he sings: with earthy, quirky, luminous clarity. Chants of a Lifetime is a reminder that simply uttering any of the many names of the Beloved has the power to free us from ourselves, and make of our hearts an offering to the One. May we never again forget. May we never stop singing." —Mirabai Starr, the author of new translations of John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila
