Brighid The Goddess

Brighid is arguably the most important goddess in Irish history yet most of what was known of her has been lost with the oral tradition that fostered her devotion. Written sources, such as “Sanas Chormaic” (Glossary of Cormac) and “Leabhar Ghabhala” , date from the 9th and 12th centuries respectively. This is long after St. Brighid established her community at Kildare so we have to be careful that we do not construct a goddess from our knowledge of the saint. The Irish Celtic scholar, An t-Athair Sean O'Quinn, rightly says, “It is an exercise in futility to try and separate the historical Christian Brighid from the Goddess since clearly the two are so interwoven.”
Brighid is the Goddess of healing, (smith) craft and poetry, useful and inspired wisdom. She is the Goddess of fire, the hearth and energy. She is the Goddess of fertility and is said to lean over every cradle. She is associated with sovereignty and protection of her isles and the sea.

Today, many places in the British Isles bear her name. As “Brigantia” she gave her name to the Celtic lands of the North of England. Rivers are also named after her including, Afon (River) Braint, the longest river on Ynys Mon (Anglesey); Brent, London; and Brue, Somerset.

Kinship:

Sanas Chormaic tells us that Brighid may have been three sister goddesses. In Ireland she is called the daughter of Dagda, the Red Man of all Knowledge, who had his house at Brugh na Boinne. Dagda is the leader of the Tuatha-de-Danaan, a warrior, master of magic and skilled craftsman. He is the son of the goddess, Danu, and the partner of the Morrigan, the Great Queen and goddess of battle.

With Tuireann Brighid had three sons, Brian, Iuchar and Iucharba. With Bres the Beautiful, a miserly ruler, she had one son, Ruadan. He tried to murder Goibniu, the smith who created magical weapons that always hit their mark, but the smith killed him. It is said that Brighid's lament for Ruadan was the first keening to be heard in Ireland.

The Synod of Dublin (1670) ordered priests to make every effort to bring an end to the wailing and screams of female keeners who accompanied the dead to the graveyard. An Irish triad goes: “Fear bruine, bean chaointe na garbhmhuilleoir, ni bhf aighidh sna flaithis aon leaba go deo.” (Three persons who will get no bed in heaven, a quarrelsome man, a keening woman and a crude miller).

Fire:

Brighid is a Fire Goddess and as Brighid's Cross is in the form of a solar wheel she may also be a Sun Goddess. It is believed that nineteen priestesses tended the eternal flame of Brighid at the place now known as Kildare. It has even been suggested that St. Brighid may have been a priestess of Brighid before her conversion to the Christian faith.

Brighid is particularly associated with the first stirrings of Spring as the days begin to lengthen, the snowdrops bloom, and the ewes begin to lactate. In a Scottish story Bride is taken captive by Beira, the Queen of Winter. Some say her winter prison is the mountain, Ben Nevis. Before the fire of the sun can warm the earth again Bride has to be freed. So a spell is cast borrowing three days from the heat of August. As Bride walks free light fills the earth and the land turns green again.

Brighid's fire is truly the fire of creativity. It is responsible for the kindling of the earth in early Spring, the kindling of sexual passion, the kindling of the body in healing, the kindling of the heart in poetry and song, the kindling of the mind in science and craft. Her fire is a guiding light to her people in times of trouble, darkness and despair. To see her pass the house at Samhain is a sign that those within will be safe throughout the dark days of Winter.

Fire in the hearth:

Until very recently the hearth formed the centre of every home and the fire burnt all year round. It was at the hearth that the women of the house practiced the magic of cookery. It was around the hearth that wisdom was passed from one generation to the next and the old stories were recited. For the more adventurous the hearth was also a focus of divination. What do you see in the movement of the flames, what do you hear in the crackle of the logs, what marks are left in the ashes of the fire? What is Brighid saying to you?

It is said that Brighid taught the Irish people how to weave as she wove her own mantle at the loom by the hearth. It is easy to imagine the very flames themselves being woven into that wondrous cloth. Brighid's Mantle is left outside the house at Imbolc. She blesses it as she passes so it will bring healing to those wrapped in it.

The Fire in the hearth is Brighid's fire of healing, divination and protection. We are all in need of healing and are wounded in some way. We all feel the need for warmth and reassurance. To find these things around the hearth of your own home is a blessing indeed.

Fire in the forge:

Today we tend to take for granted the many highly sophisticated technical tools that we use in our daily lives. So, we can hardly imagine the awe in which the smith was held in ancient times. Smithcraft was seen as the epitome of magic, for only through such power could a mortal take the unassuming ore from the earth and fashion it into tools, weapons and jewellery that shone with patent beauty.

The smith's craft was an intrinsic part of every aspect of life. Tools, agricultural implements, weapons for protection, clasps and jewellery for adornment, shining metal mirrors to see not only the living but to glimpse the otherworld and divine the future.
Smithcraft is associated with creation and re-creation myths. Brighid's fire is the fire at the heart of creation. The fire responsible for the re-creation of the year each Spring. The fire that forges the sword of sovereignty, the fire that shines in all that is beautiful. The fire that illuminates and smelts our hearts bringing wisdom.

Fire in the heart:

Today we have access to an unlimited amount of written information and can carry thousands of songs in our iPod. Good stories, music, and art have long opened us to wonder, magic and awe. Before there was any written word or musical notation every story and song had to be committed to memory. Those who could recount tales of wisdom, history, and mythology were held in high regard as were those who could sing us alive and lead us to ecstasy with their drumming and dance.

Brighid is the Goddess of the creative arts, ancestral memory and the oral tradition. The “Leabhar Ghabala” refers to Brighid as, “The Poet”. It is through her that the hidden insights of the otherworld rise from our unconscious minds to form story and song.
In many cultures wise fools carry small bells that chime as they walk and in Ireland poets once carried bells in honour of Brighid. The snowdrop, which is sacred to Brighid, is sometimes called “The Candlemas Bell”. A reminder that thisbeautiful bell like flower heralds Imbolc.

Fertility:

Brighid is the Goddess of sacred wells and springs. The female body is held in special reverence because of the mystery of transformation from water to blood to milk to new life. The cow is sacred to Brighid and this association passes to St. Brighid. She was reared on the milk of a white cow with red ears. She later owned twelve of them and is often depicted with a cow by her side. In the Hebrides she is known as, “Golden haired Bride of the kine”. Brighid's feast is heralded by the flowering of the milk white snowdrop and the first lactation of ewes.

In Scotland “Latha Féill' Brighde” was heralded by the emergence of snakes from their winter holes. Snakes are ancient symbols of the mysteries of birth, growth, decay and renewal. They have an obvious association with flowing water.

Brighid is the Goddess of the fertility of Spring. It is natural that childbirth should also be one of her prime concerns. She is said to lean over the cradle of every newborn child. In the Hebrides she would be invited into any home where a woman was in labour. She is the Goddess of prosperity because her abundant milk, fertile land and nourishing ale provide a feast for her people.

Sacred animals:

Cows and ewes, domesticated for their milk, are sacred to Brighid as is the snake which is noted for its connection with the mysteries of regeneration.
The wolf is also sacred to Brighid. This wild animal is believed to be extremely wise and in Celtic tradition it rules over the dark time of the year, from Samhain to Imbolc, when all sleeps awaiting the regeneration of Spring. It is interesting that Brighid has a place in Voodoo as Mamam Brigitte, the Loa of the underworld, death, resurrection and protector of children. St. Brighid is sometimes depicted with a wolf by her side.

Some birds are sacred to Brighid. She is known as, “The White Swan”. The swan is one of the most beautiful of birds. It is considered a royal bird and is noted for its longevity. It is fierce when threatened. Swans are associated with shape shifting and there are many stories of humans turning into swans. Swans also link the waters and the heavens. Other birds that are sacred to Brighid include the Lark, the Linnet and the Oyster Catcher known in Ireland as “Giolla Bride”, Bride's Page

This body is not me.
I am not limited by this body.

I am life without boundaries.

I have never been born,

and I have never died.

Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars, manifestations from my wondrous true mind.

Since before time, I have been free.

Birth and death are only doors through which we pass, sacred thresholds on our journey.

Birth and death are a game of hide- and seek.

So laugh with me,

hold my hand,

let us say good-bye,

say good-bye, to meet again soon.

We meet today.

We will meet again tomorrow.

We will meet at the source every moment.

We meet each other in all forms of life.

Tonight is a magickal night for scrying and seeking answers. Since it is a night of candles ... I am sharing this Divination that using Candle Wax... I find it works magickally.
Lady Abigail

Divine, Scrying and Visions of Wax

You’ll need;
Candle Wax or Bee’s Wax
The best thing for this drippings off of several candles you have burned. (recycling is always good)

As you ready you Wax

Affix your mind on the question you are seeking the answers too.

Melt all the wax in one pot until all the wax is liquefied (Do not Stir).

Slowly pour all of a good amount of the melted wax into a bowl of very, very cold water.

As the wax cools in the water, it will take on a unique shape.

Let you mind go free as you look at the hardened wax figure, mush as you would in reading tea leaves or clouds.

The wax will form a shape that will reveal the answers you seek.

I remember back in the 60's and 70's, when I had German Shepherds, and it was all the rage to fear the 'police dogs' that would turn on you just like that. Fucking idiots. None of my Shepherds would have-unless you threatened me...

'Since the 1980s, the media have falsely portrayed the pitbull as a bloodthirsty monster, inherently more dangerous than other strong breeds of dog. There is absolutely no factual basis for that narrative, but it's led to a vicious cycle in which people who want a badass dog to fight, or to guard property, or to intimidate rival gangs tend to choose pitbulls (or Rottweilers, another much-maligned breed). Pitbulls are the dog of choice for irresponsible breeders, dog-fighters, people who want a tough-looking dog to tie up in their yard and those who refuse to have their male dogs fixed because they think those big, swinging balls makes them look tough by proxy ( 86 percent of fatal canine attacks involve an unneutered male, according to the American Humane Society).'

The Legend of the Great White Buffalo....

One summer a long time ago, the seven sacred council fires of the Lakota Sioux came together and camped. The sun was strong and the people were starving for there was no game.

Two young men went out to hunt. Along the way, the two men met a beautiful young woman dressed in white who floated as she walked. One man had bad desires for the woman and tried to touch her, but was consumed by a cloud and turned into a pile of bones.

The woman spoke to the second young man and said, "Return to your people and tell them I am coming." This holy woman brought a wrapped bundle to the people. She unwrapped the bundle giving to the people a sacred pipe and teaching them how to use it to pray. "With this holy pipe, you will walk like a living prayer," she said. The holy woman told the Sioux about the value of the buffalo, the women and the children. "You are from Mother Earth," she told the women, "What you are doing is as great as the warriors do."

Before she left, she told the people she would return. As she walked away, she rolled over four times, turning into a white female buffalo calf. It is said after that day the Lakota honored their pipe, and buffalo were plentiful. (from John Lame Deer's telling in 1967).

Many believe that the buffalo calf, Miracle, born August 20, 1994 symbolizes the coming together of humanity into a oneness of heart, mind, and spirit.

Tangerines may be smaller than oranges, but they are several times higher in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants such as vitamins C & A, calcium, magnesium & selenium, and beta-carotene & luteins. Tangerines contain anti-viral and anti-cancer properties and are particularly beneficial for colds, fever, flu, arthritis, epstein barr, shingles, constipation, age related macular degeneration, bone repair, neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, and breast, colon, lung, stomach, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Tangerines are an excellent food to help boost the immune system and keep it functioning at optimum levels. Their high fiber content also helps to lower cholesterol and protect the heart and cardiovascular system from illness and disease. Tangerines are high in pectin which can significantly improve digestion and elimination. Tangerines are also a great weight-loss food that can help to keep you full, satisfied, and full of energy. They are also a perfect food to eat after working out as they can deeply hydrate and replenish the body on a cellular level. Tangerines are typically easy to peel and are sweeter and juicier than oranges which makes them easy to eat out of hand and enjoyable for adults and children alike. Tangerine peels can also be added to water and/or tea to provide additional anti-bacterial and medicinal benefits. There are several varieties of tangerines on the market today including clementines, pixie, fall-glo, ponkan, sunburst, and murcott honey. Murcott honey tangerines are considered the “royalty” of the tangerine family as they are incredibly sweet and smooth and have a rich flavor and a deep orange flesh. Murcott honey tangerines readily grow in Florida and California and are at their peak from late January-March. Tangerines can be made it into a delicious fresh juice that is fortified with an amazing array of nutritional and health benefits. Tangerines combine well with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries and are wonderful added to smoothies and salads. Tangerines can be found in the fresh produce section of your local supermarket and health food store.

This right here is the crap people believe by closed minded uneducated people who don't know the real truth about Wicca, nor do they know the real truth about being Pagan. These people will never learn because not only are they scared of the unknown, but they refuse to hear the truth because the Truth is also scary to them.
Its not Hollywood that ruins us as much as it is the person who lives right next door to you. Sad but true.

      Daily Devotions of the Goddess

Standing within the cool morning air I watched the sunrise. I watched as She slowly melted the morning clouds away to see Her radiant beams of red, gold and silver slowly fill the dawn. In that moment I understood that only I can allow the clouds of negative energy fill my life. Or I can push through them and be that force of positive energy for all to see.
I allowed myself to let go of the past, the self pity, and the lost hopes hidden within my soul and give thanks unto the wisdom She teaches me in quite understanding. For as I know the past cannot be changed, I also know the future cannot be controlled beyond my own heart.
Blessed be the Goddess by whatever name or names you may call Her.
