Crazy, Sexy KitchenLove, Eat, Heal
by Kris CarrGrandma’s recipe for life
Every time I see a cardinal, I know my grandmother is with me. This regal, red bird was Grandma’s favorite. It reminds me of her fiery Colombian spirit and the blue flames that blazed in her restaurant's kitchen. Grandma infused her food with love, captivating stories and copious amounts of butter. And everyone who slipped into a booth at The Village Gourmet in Pawling, NY felt that love from their taste buds to their toes.
My grandma died nearly a decade ago, but I swear she’s been sending me flocks of cardinals in her absence. I think she knew I’d be needing these precious symbols of her love. Two weeks before she died, I received my own walloping wake up call. Incurable cancer. I needed a lifeline. I needed my grandma. So I went into the kitchen—and I’ve never left.
Although Grandma’s passion had led me to the power of food, not all of her recipes were healthy. I kept her gusto and the love that she put into her cuisine, but ditched the ingredients that bought her a one-way ticket to arthritis, diverticulitis and a host of other inflammatory conditions. I also ditched my own addictions and compulsions around food.
My new kitchen was (and still is) a peaceful haven–fully stocked with nutrient-dense, plant-empowered, whole foods. It’s my direct connection to spirit, and of course, my juicer! Slowly, as my time in the kitchen deepened, I started to feel better. While I may never be in remission from cancer, I am currently in remission from an unhealthy relationship to food.
For nearly a decade now, I’ve been teaching others (like glorious you) how to thrive by filling their bodies with energizing vitamins, nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Not a day goes by when someone doesn’t write me to say, “Thanks, I feel better too now”. Those letters from my readers are my digital cardinals.
The fact is, we need help and we need each other. We’re a nation riddled with preventable, lifestyle-driven diseases. We consume far too many animal products, processed and refined foods, saturated fats and empty calories. Industries that profit from both our ignorance and our misfortune spoon feed us confusion and deception. We’re taught to solely blame our luck-of-the-draw genes for our health issues, rather than our daily habits, dietary choices and interplay with the environment that surrounds us. The real truth lies somewhere in the middle and the good news is that we are more capable of turning around our global health crisis than we think.
I dedicated my most recent book, Crazy Sexy Kitchen: 150 Plant-Empowered Recipes to Ignite a Revolution, to Grandma. It’s my way of saying thank you for introducing me to the kitchen—the place that has become my pharmacy and transformed my life. I’m just sorry that I didn’t have the chance to share my decade-long health odyssey with her. I know that the knowledge in Crazy Sexy Kitchen would have improved her quality of life. I also know she would have gotten a real kick out of my friend Chef Chad Sarno, who helped me create the glorious recipes.
If Grandma could sit at my dinner table today, perhaps she would have realized that you don’t have to compromise pleasurable cuisine for nourishment and good health—they actually go hand in hand. Click here to read an excerpt from the book. |

Mermaids 101 Imagine Our Sea-Dwelling Kin
by Doreen VirtueDo mermaids really exist?
Our planet is over 70 percent water, containing an estimated 332.5 million cubic miles of water. Given this volume, is it inconceivable to imagine that there are aquatic creatures beyond our comprehension? After all, as researchers dive deeper in the oceans, each year they discover new species of fish, shark, crab, and other sea dwellers.
Mermaids and mermen are one-half human and one-half fish. Their upper bodies look human from the torso to the head, while from the stomach down they sport fish scales, fins, and tails. They can breathe and see clearly underwater without diving equipment.
Mermaids inhabit our oceans and lakes, and can be seen by those with open minds and hearts.
Different varieties include:
Merangels: These mermaids and mermen have a celestial connection, and are compelled to help save the ocean and its inhabitants.
Merfairies: Mermaids and mermen who guard bodies of freshwater and their inhabitants, Merfairies are thinner and more petite than Merangels.
Selkies: These mermaids appear as seals while in the ocean and as female humans while on land. They’re most commonly found in Scotland. In Ireland, they’re called Roanes. Selkies help fishermen and sailors.
Undines: These “sea sprites,” derived from Greek figures known as Nereids, are tiny, light-colored, wingless beings who govern and live in water. You can see and hear them playing in the spray of the ocean. (Sirens, another category of creatures from Greek mythology that are often confused with mermaids, are human females with bird features, including talons instead of feet. They are infamous for singing irresistibly seductive songs to sailors, and then fatally luring them deep into the ocean.)
Do mermaids really exist, or are they products of sailors’ delusions from too many days at sea? Legends say that mariners, lonely for female companionship, mistook manatees and dolphins for mermaids. I believe that mermaids, unicorns, fairies, and other so-called mythical animals once lived as physical beings on Earth. After all, these creatures are represented in countless paintings, carvings, and writings around the world since ancient times. They were either hunted into extinction, or they elected to move to a higher-vibrational frequency (nonphysical) that only pure-hearted believers can access.
You may be wondering, Are mermaids as real as angels and fairies? I hope you’ll draw your own conclusions. Although mermaids are considered beautiful fantasy images, you may decide that they’re something more. Perhaps, like unicorns, mermaids once physically existed upon this earth but became extinct or ascended to the nonphysical level to escape painful exploitation. Could this be why so many ancient paintings depict both unicorns and mermaids?
Like me, you may be naturally drawn to paintings and stories about mermaids, and find pleasure in looking at their images. Mermaids, after all, represent powerful and independent beings who live adventurous nature-based lives. Perhaps this is why this archetype intrigues men and women alike. |

Candidates’ Faces Tell All!
It’s almost election time here in the States, and we’ll soon be visiting the polls to elect our next U.S. President and Vice President. The competition is heated and the race is close, so many of us are still deciding who will be the best team to help heal our country. How do you cut through the political rhetoric and find out who each candidate really is? According to Hay House authorJean Haner, their faces tell all!
For more than 25 years, Jean studied the ancient principles of Chinese face reading and through her amazing work (The Wisdom of Your Face), she has uncovered how certain facial features and markings on your face can reveal deeper truths about you.
What do the faces of the presidential candidates reveal? On Democratic presidential nominee President Barack Obama: Jean says that his temples are slightly indented, which reveals a tendency toward being compulsive about work, but it also shows a highly spiritual nature. For the Democrat’s vice-presidential spot, Joe Biden, his receding hairline and broad forehead reveal that he’s open-minded, yet thinks for himself. On the Republican side, Jean discloses that presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s low eyebrows show that he is approachable yet a bit socially awkward, while Republican vice-presidential hopeful Paul Ryan has a little V in his hairline (a widow’s peak) which indicates he has magnetic charm and natural intuition.
If you want more details about how the mole on President Obama’s nose or Romney’s crow’s feet may affect the fate of the country, you can click here and read the full story of Jean’s revelations about the candidates’ faces.
You can talk to Jean LIVE and ask her questions about how to read someone’s face by tuning in to her new call-in talk show on Hay House Radio: Your Hidden Symmetry. |

“I first discovered Hay House while going through a nasty divorce 13 years ago. I can safely say that Dr. Wayne Dyer held my hand and helped me cross over to the side of self-discovery. By looking inward I noticed that I could handle the outward.
You should all be commended for the quality of literature you put out and congratulations to Louise for her futuristic creativity in making this all happen. Reading your publications is time well spent. If more people would indulge in your books, we would have a much better world.
Thanks Dr. Dyer, Louise and all the numerous others who have allowed me to join in their spiritual growth, so that I could attain my own.”

A 4-Letter Word for FreedomHow to diffuse the "F" bomb“It probably doesn’t matter as much as you think it does.”
– John C. Parkin
How do I begin a column about John C. Parkin’s new book when it’s all about the “F” word? Yes, that word. The one that our mothers taught us never to say.
I’ll play it safe and try an historic approach: Did you know that there are many theories about how the “F” word first came about? Some say that it originated during the Middle Ages when the growing population was being controlled by the reigning king. If a couple wanted children, they had to seek royal permission. Thus the phrase emerged: Fornicating Under Consent of the King—later shortened to its four-letter version. Others say that it is credited to Irish law where the crime of adultery was documented on the police blotter as being bookedFor Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Both acronyms, however, are said to be mere urban legends.
Oh, who am I kidding? Whatever its origin, one thing is true: The “F” word has caused quite a ruckus throughout history—and still continues to do so today. It was solely responsible for the banning of James Joyce’s famous epic Ulysses, the censorship of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and the trial of its publisher; the imprisonment of stand-up comedian and satirist Lenny Bruce, the invocation of the 10-second delay for live television broadcasts after singer Bono let it slip out at the Golden Globe Awards, the constant trouble that George Carlin was getting himself into, and the list goes on. And let’s not forget all of the “frakking” dialogue on the new version of Battlestar Galactica!
Of course, the “F” word may have found more comfortable places to live nowadays—on cable TV, at many sporting events, in text messages, in office lunchrooms and—thanks to Gordon Ramsey’s fondness for the word—in its own TV show.
However, let the truth be told. Wherever and whenever this expletive is used—as a noun, an interjection, or endeared with the name of a family member—it’s bound to rattle a few nerves.
And that’s John’s point. He wants to shake you up! He sees us in our dualistic world where we’re trapped and free, tense and relaxed, sick and well and he wants to move us from bad to good, from stressed to chilled and from materialistic to peaceful. When you read John’s amusing and empowering book F**K It Therapy, you’ll laugh along as he shows us this “new therapy” of using the power of the queen-mother of all dirty words to shake you out of the stress and anxiety that dominates your daily life. John offers you many opportunities to toss this “F” bomb over all of your troubles—toxic relationships, illness, money woes, self-control issues, fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, a lousy job or even the weather—and watch the expressive explosion clear them away.
In his very lighthearted book, John also has a valuable lesson for us. He believes that we are stuck in a prison of our own making. He believes that we hold on to too many things.Do you have trouble surrendering that inner junk that makes you miserable—taking things too personally, not feeling good enough, worrying too much about how you look and what others think? John’s solution: Just say those two liberating and colorful words and let go of your pain.
It may be a little shocking at first, but soon you’ll notice something quite astonishing: The more you use it, the more it loses its power and allows you the freedom to do whatever it is you want to do.
If you’re sensitive to this familiar expletive, this may not be the book for you. Though, you certainly may know several brazen relatives and friends who may benefit from it. Click here to purchase F**K It Therapy.
Thank you for keeping an open mind. Thank you for letting us get awfully close to crossing the line. And for those who dare, we invite you to taste the spiritual freedom of telling all of your trouble to just ______ (We’ll let you fill in the blank!)
Sorry Mom…
Donna Abate
Present Moments Editor
P.S. We’d love to hear your feedback on this topic. Do you have an aversion to these two startling words or are you brave enough to let them help you to break free of your inner prison. Be one of the first 25 people to answer these questions and we’ll send you the first 2 chapters of John’s latest book: F**K It Therapy. Just email me here. |
