It's the Samhain season, which means many people in the Pagan and Wiccan communities are working with spirits and otherworldly beings. Sometime, you may call upon them on purpose -- other times, they might just drop in unannounced! Be sure to read our articles about working with the realm of the spirit world! Learn to identify the different types of guides, how to tell if a spirit doesn't really have your best interests at heart, and how to get rid of spirits that you don't want hanging around.

Spirit Guide Warning Signs
Every once in a while, someone will manage to contact what they think is a spirit guide - perhaps by way of a Ouija board or other method of divination -- and the next thing you know, things are getting weird. If any of the following scenarios seem familiar, then chances are that what you've connected to is not a spirit guide at all. Here are the warning signs to watch out for. Read Full Article

How to Hold a Seance
Many Wiccans and Pagans communicate with the spirit world by way of holding seances. Before you have a seance of your own, there are a few things to keep in mind. A séance is an event that can either be fantastic, or a real mess. Which one it is will depend on how much preparation goes into it. With a little bit of planning and thought ahead of time, you can pave the way for your séance to go smoothly. Certainly, it's a good idea to expect the unexpected -- after all, the dead are hardly predictable -- but by setting yourself a few guidelines in advance, you can make sure that everyone has the best experience possible.Read Full Article

Celebrate Samhain!

It's the weekend before the biggest Sabbat of the year - Samhain - so if you're celebrating over the next couple of days, About Pagan/Wiccan has a collection of rituals, crafts, divination tools and more for you to help ring in the witch's new year! It's a night when the veil is thin, we honor our ancestors, and mark the cycle of life and death.

If you're one of our Southern Hemisphere readers, you're gearing up for Beltane, which celebrates the greening of the earth and new life - the direct opposite of the Samhain season. Whichever one you may be observing over the next few days, we wish you all a happy and blessed Sabbat!

Follow Pagan/Wiccan on Twitter or Join Me On Facebook.

Celebrating Samhain
The fields are bare, the leaves have fallen from the trees, and the skies are going gray and cold. It is the time of year when the earth has died and gone dormant. Every year on October 31 (or May 1, if you're in the Southern Hemisphere) the Sabbat we call Samhain presents us with the opportunity to once more celebrate the cycle of death and rebirth. For many Pagan and Wiccan traditions, Samhain is a time to reconnect with our ancestors, and honor those who have died. This is the time when the veil between our world and the spirit realm is thin, so it's the perfect time of year to make contact with the dead. You may want to take a moment to read up on:

Samhain Rituals and Ceremonies
Depending on your individual spiritual path, there are many different ways you can celebrate Samhain, but typically the focus is on either honoring our ancestors, or the cycle of death and rebirth. This is the time of year when the gardens and fields are brown and dead. The nights are getting longer, there's a chill in the air, and winter is looming. We may choose to honor our ancestors, celebrating those who have died, and even try to communicate with them. Here are a few rituals you may want to think about trying for Samhain -- and remember, any of them can be adapted for either a solitary practitioner or a small group, with just a little planning ahead.

Samhain Divination
For many Wiccans and Pagans, Samhain is a time to do magic that focuses on the spirit world. Learn how to properly conduct a seance, how to do some Samhain divination workings, and the way to figure out what a spirit guide is really up to!

All About Beltane
April's showers have given way to rich and fertile earth, and as the land greens, there are few celebrations as representative of fertility as Beltane. Observed on May 1st, festivities typically begin the evening before, on the last night of April. It's a time to welcome the abundance of the fertile earth, and a day that has a long (and sometimes scandalous) history. Depending on your tradition, there are a number of ways you can celebrate this Sabbat. Read Full Article

The Mindful Manifesto: How Doing Less and Noticing More Can Help Us Thrive in a Stressed-Out World
by Dr. Jonty Heaversedge and Ed Halliwell

Learning To Be

Giving yourself permission to be—doing less and noticing more—is whatThe Mindful Manifesto is really about. It isn't the usual kind of manifesto—there's no great plan to solve all our problems instantly. Instead, it's an invitation to let go of doing, at least for a time, and learn how to be, right now, in the present moment.

The word manifesto derives from the Latin verb manifestare, which means "to show plainly." In English, to manifest means "to become apparent." Our suggestion is that by learning how to be, we might start to release a deep wisdom that can show us plainly how things really are and that this might naturally create the ground for knowing what to do. Things can become apparent, our deepest values can become clear, and we can begin to act with greater wisdom.

By using the word manifesto in this way, we are reclaiming its true meaning—not a plan of action, but a call to being. By learning how to be, we take our foot off the accelerator, come out of overdrive, and restore some balance to our lives. Rather than desperately searching for a cure to our problems, we begin to let a natural wakefulness emerge. We stop seeking answers and let them come to us. We give up the fight—and the stress that comes with it.

Learning how to be could make a real difference to our wellbeing, not just as individuals, but as couples, families, communities, and nations—and as a planet. Whether it's relationship issues, an unhealthy addiction, or the threat of war, we create space for choices to emerge. As the dust created by our stress begins to settle, we might open up and relax into our situation.

A new kind of wisdom may start to dawn, and we can begin to manifest more creatively, decisively, and appropriately. It sounds simple, doesn't it? And in a sense, it is—if we can really be present to the here and now, we might start to relate with our lives in a more harmonious way. Unfortunately, although it is simple, manifesting this isn't easy.

The Method of Mindfulness

With mindfulness, we train in paying attention, noticing what's happening in our body, our thoughts, and our emotions, as well as the world around us. By working with simple meditation practices, we deliberately and gently bring more awareness—more being—into our experience. Gradually, as we pay attention, we begin to notice how we get stuck on automatic pilot, unconsciously playing out patterns that create stress and suffering in our lives. As we practice this new way of relating, we can gradually start to free ourselves from these outmoded habits.

To practice mindfulness, we let go of action for a while and just watch what happens, with curiosity and friendliness. We see how everything arises and passes away, and how we don't have to get so caught up in everything—we can observe it all in a friendly, compassionate, and interested way. We begin to see that we aren't our thoughts and feelings, and that they don't have to dominate us—we learn that we can stop taking things so personally. We start to see the possibility of living more lightly, and the weight on our shoulders begins to lift. We discover the foundation for a kinder, and more confident relationship with ourselves, with others, and with life.

In mindfulness, we learn to tolerate our impulse to follow patterns that don't serve us. We cultivate a gap between thought and action, and gradually, as we become more skilled in our practice, the ability to dwell in this gap grows, and we are impelled less and less into knee-jerk reactions. We can stay with our experience long enough to consider our options. We can step out of automatic pilot.

Practicing mindfulness means giving up the search for instant answers that come from outside of us. It means taking a profound, radical step, starting to work with suffering in the heart of our own experience. This is supremely empowering—for while we may not appear to have full control over external events, we can always work with our mind, gently, firmly, and repeatedly training ourselves to thrive in the midst of life's challenges. In undertaking this inner work, we aren't just tinkering with what job we do, where we live, how much money we make, or who we decide to be friends with—we are changing how we relate with our consciousness, the faculty that actually experiences what we do. This means that whatever happens to us, we have the tools for wellbeing more squarely in our own hands.

Inspiration
Crazy, Sexy KitchenLove, Eat, Heal
by Kris CarrGrandma’s recipe for life
Every time I see a cardinal, I know my grandmother is with me. This regal, red bird was Grandma’s favorite. It reminds me of her fiery Colombian spirit and the blue flames that blazed in her restaurant's kitchen. Grandma infused her food with love, captivating stories and copious amounts of butter. And everyone who slipped into a booth at The Village Gourmet in Pawling, NY felt that love from their taste buds to their toes.
My grandma died nearly a decade ago, but I swear she’s been sending me flocks of cardinals in her absence. I think she knew I’d be needing these precious symbols of her love. Two weeks before she died, I received my own walloping wake up call. Incurable cancer. I needed a lifeline. I needed my grandma. So I went into the kitchen—and I’ve never left.

Although Grandma’s passion had led me to the power of food, not all of her recipes were healthy. I kept her gusto and the love that she put into her cuisine, but ditched the ingredients that bought her a one-way ticket to arthritis, diverticulitis and a host of other inflammatory conditions. I also ditched my own addictions and compulsions around food.

My new kitchen was (and still is) a peaceful haven–fully stocked with nutrient-dense, plant-empowered, whole foods. It’s my direct connection to spirit, and of course, my juicer! Slowly, as my time in the kitchen deepened, I started to feel better. While I may never be in remission from cancer, I am currently in remission from an unhealthy relationship to food.
For nearly a decade now, I’ve been teaching others (like glorious you) how to thrive by filling their bodies with energizing vitamins, nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Not a day goes by when someone doesn’t write me to say, “Thanks, I feel better too now”. Those letters from my readers are my digital cardinals.
The fact is, we need help and we need each other. We’re a nation riddled with preventable, lifestyle-driven diseases. We consume far too many animal products, processed and refined foods, saturated fats and empty calories. Industries that profit from both our ignorance and our misfortune spoon feed us confusion and deception. We’re taught to solely blame our luck-of-the-draw genes for our health issues, rather than our daily habits, dietary choices and interplay with the environment that surrounds us. The real truth lies somewhere in the middle and the good news is that we are more capable of turning around our global health crisis than we think.
I dedicated my most recent book, Crazy Sexy Kitchen: 150 Plant-Empowered Recipes to Ignite a Revolution, to Grandma. It’s my way of saying thank you for introducing me to the kitchen—the place that has become my pharmacy and transformed my life. I’m just sorry that I didn’t have the chance to share my decade-long health odyssey with her. I know that the knowledge in Crazy Sexy Kitchen would have improved her quality of life. I also know she would have gotten a real kick out of my friend Chef Chad Sarno, who helped me create the glorious recipes.

If Grandma could sit at my dinner table today, perhaps she would have realized that you don’t have to compromise pleasurable cuisine for nourishment and good health—they actually go hand in hand. Click here to read an excerpt from the book.

Mermaids 101 Imagine Our Sea-Dwelling Kin
by Doreen VirtueDo mermaids really exist?
Our planet is over 70 percent water, containing an estimated 332.5 million cubic miles of water. Given this volume, is it inconceivable to imagine that there are aquatic creatures beyond our comprehension? After all, as researchers dive deeper in the oceans, each year they discover new species of fish, shark, crab, and other sea dwellers.

Mermaids and mermen are one-half human and one-half fish. Their upper bodies look human from the torso to the head, while from the stomach down they sport fish scales, fins, and tails. They can breathe and see clearly underwater without diving equipment.
Mermaids inhabit our oceans and lakes, and can be seen by those with open minds and hearts.
Different varieties include:
Merangels: These mermaids and mermen have a celestial connection, and are compelled to help save the ocean and its inhabitants.
Merfairies: Mermaids and mermen who guard bodies of freshwater and their inhabitants, Merfairies are thinner and more petite than Merangels.
Selkies: These mermaids appear as seals while in the ocean and as female humans while on land. They’re most commonly found in Scotland. In Ireland, they’re called Roanes. Selkies help fishermen and sailors.
Undines: These “sea sprites,” derived from Greek figures known as Nereids, are tiny, light-colored, wingless beings who govern and live in water. You can see and hear them playing in the spray of the ocean. (Sirens, another category of creatures from Greek mythology that are often confused with mermaids, are human females with bird features, including talons instead of feet. They are infamous for singing irresistibly seductive songs to sailors, and then fatally luring them deep into the ocean.)
Do mermaids really exist, or are they products of sailors’ delusions from too many days at sea? Legends say that mariners, lonely for female companionship, mistook manatees and dolphins for mermaids. I believe that mermaids, unicorns, fairies, and other so-called mythical animals once lived as physical beings on Earth. After all, these creatures are represented in countless paintings, carvings, and writings around the world since ancient times. They were either hunted into extinction, or they elected to move to a higher-vibrational frequency (nonphysical) that only pure-hearted believers can access.
You may be wondering, Are mermaids as real as angels and fairies? I hope you’ll draw your own conclusions. Although mermaids are considered beautiful fantasy images, you may decide that they’re something more. Perhaps, like unicorns, mermaids once physically existed upon this earth but became extinct or ascended to the nonphysical level to escape painful exploitation. Could this be why so many ancient paintings depict both unicorns and mermaids?
Like me, you may be naturally drawn to paintings and stories about mermaids, and find pleasure in looking at their images. Mermaids, after all, represent powerful and independent beings who live adventurous nature-based lives. Perhaps this is why this archetype intrigues men and women alike.

Candidates’ Faces Tell All!

It’s almost election time here in the States, and we’ll soon be visiting the polls to elect our next U.S. President and Vice President. The competition is heated and the race is close, so many of us are still deciding who will be the best team to help heal our country. How do you cut through the political rhetoric and find out who each candidate really is? According to Hay House authorJean Haner, their faces tell all!
For more than 25 years, Jean studied the ancient principles of Chinese face reading and through her amazing work (The Wisdom of Your Face), she has uncovered how certain facial features and markings on your face can reveal deeper truths about you.
What do the faces of the presidential candidates reveal? On Democratic presidential nominee President Barack Obama: Jean says that his temples are slightly indented, which reveals a tendency toward being compulsive about work, but it also shows a highly spiritual nature. For the Democrat’s vice-presidential spot, Joe Biden, his receding hairline and broad forehead reveal that he’s open-minded, yet thinks for himself.  On the Republican side, Jean discloses that presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s low eyebrows show that he is approachable yet a bit socially awkward, while Republican vice-presidential hopeful Paul Ryan has a little V in his hairline (a widow’s peak) which indicates he has magnetic charm and natural intuition.
If you want more details about how the mole on President Obama’s nose or Romney’s crow’s feet may affect the fate of the country, you can click here and read the full story of Jean’s revelations about the candidates’ faces.

You can talk to Jean LIVE and ask her questions about how to read someone’s face by tuning in to her new call-in talk show on Hay House Radio: Your Hidden Symmetry.

Be a Part of a LIVE PBS AudienceWe’d like to invite you to come and support Hay House author Marcelle Pick in her upcoming PBS special, “Is It Me or My Hormones?” You can be a part of the live audience during the taping of this inspiring and informative program about one of the most common and agonizing problems facing women today.

Why Hay House Means So Much To You…

Your letters celebrating our 25th anniversary this year really touched our hearts, so we’ll be sharing some of them each month. What an amazing community of loving and generous hearts we are a part of.  Life loves you and so do we!
I first discovered Hay House while going through a nasty divorce 13 years ago. I can safely say that Dr. Wayne Dyer held my hand and helped me cross over to the side of self-discovery. By looking inward I noticed that I could handle the outward.
You should all be commended for the quality of literature you put out and congratulations to Louise for her futuristic creativity in making this all happen. Reading your publications is time well spent. If more people would indulge in your books, we would have a much better world.
Thanks Dr. Dyer, Louise and all the numerous others who have allowed me to join in their spiritual growth, so that I could attain my own.”

Wishes for the Grieving and Healing Heart
by Tricia LaVoice
The beautiful parable of the water bugs and the dragonfly, written by an anonymous author, has often been a source of comfort and inspiration to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. The dragonfly stands as a symbol of transformation and the different stages of life, a reminder that there is more to the world than our current perception allows.
In Wishes for the Grieving and Healing Heart, author Tricia LaVoice expands upon this metaphor and uses her own personal experiences to deliver earnest insights into the emotion of loss.

A 4-Letter Word for FreedomHow to diffuse the "F" bomb“It probably doesn’t matter as much as you think it does.”
– John C. Parkin
How do I begin a column about John C. Parkin’s new book when it’s all about the “F” word? Yes, that word. The one that our mothers taught us never to say.

I’ll play it safe and try an historic approach: Did you know that there are many theories about how the “F” word first came about? Some say that it originated during the Middle Ages when the growing population was being controlled by the reigning king. If a couple wanted children, they had to seek royal permission. Thus the phrase emerged: Fornicating Under Consent of the King—later shortened to its four-letter version. Others say that it is credited to Irish law where the crime of adultery was documented on the police blotter as being bookedFor Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Both acronyms, however, are said to be mere urban legends.

Oh, who am I kidding? Whatever its origin, one thing is true: The “F” word has caused quite a ruckus throughout history—and still continues to do so today. It was solely responsible for the banning of James Joyce’s famous epic Ulysses, the censorship of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and the trial of its publisher; the imprisonment of stand-up comedian and satirist Lenny Bruce, the invocation of the 10-second delay for live television broadcasts after singer Bono let it slip out at the Golden Globe Awards, the constant trouble that George Carlin was getting himself into, and the list goes on.  And let’s not forget all of the “frakking” dialogue on the new version of Battlestar Galactica!

Of course, the “F” word may have found more comfortable places to live nowadays—on cable TV, at many sporting events, in text messages, in office lunchrooms and—thanks to Gordon Ramsey’s fondness for the word—in its own TV show.
However, let the truth be told. Wherever and whenever this expletive is used—as a noun, an interjection, or endeared with the name of a family member—it’s bound to rattle a few nerves.

And that’s John’s point. He wants to shake you up! He sees us in our dualistic world where we’re trapped and free, tense and relaxed, sick and well and he wants to move us from bad to good, from stressed to chilled and from materialistic to peaceful. When you read John’s amusing and empowering book F**K It Therapy, you’ll laugh along as he shows us this “new therapy” of using the power of the queen-mother of all dirty words to shake you out of the stress and anxiety that dominates your daily life. John offers you many opportunities to toss this “F” bomb over all of your troubles—toxic relationships, illness, money woes, self-control issues, fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, a lousy job or even the weather—and watch the expressive explosion clear them away.
In his very lighthearted book, John also has a valuable lesson for us. He believes that we are stuck in a prison of our own making. He believes that we hold on to too many things.Do you have trouble surrendering that inner junk that makes you miserable—taking things too personally, not feeling good enough, worrying too much about how you look and what others think? John’s solution: Just say those two liberating and colorful words and let go of your pain.

It may be a little shocking at first, but soon you’ll notice something quite astonishing: The more you use it, the more it loses its power and allows you the freedom to do whatever it is you want to do.

If you’re sensitive to this familiar expletive, this may not be the book for you. Though, you certainly may know several brazen relatives and friends who may benefit from it. Click here to purchase F**K It Therapy.

Thank you for keeping an open mind. Thank you for letting us get awfully close to crossing the line. And for those who dare, we invite you to taste the spiritual freedom of telling all of your trouble to just ______ (We’ll let you fill in the blank!)
Sorry Mom…

Neale Donald Walsch

Something like 108 billion people have lived on our planet during its history, and despite all of the experiences in all of the lifetimes of all of those people, we have still not found a way to exist together in peace and harmony, much less create individual lives with a powerfully glorious, intrinsic meaning and a wonderfully joyful purpose. Life has such a meaning and purpose, but across thousands of years only a very small number of human beings seem to have really understood it. Until now.

Now, everyone seems to be "getting it" all at once—and agreeing with each other, at last, that it truly is... The Only Thing That Matters.

You have been told that humanity’s basic instinct is survival. That is not your basic instinct at all. Once you remember your true basic instinct, you will have a whole new basis upon which to make every decision and choice in your life.

This book speaks to you, from you, of that. Do not be surprised if it feels like your own diary, with your own thoughts, recorded long, long ago, newly found again. Here is the missing piece to the puzzle. Ah, yes, it was right there in front of you all along... and now you see it again, but as if for the first time, and finally, everything fits.

Here's what Experts are saying about Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology

"The future of self-care is now with this comprehensive guide for self regulation and self-health. You owe it to yourself to learn and use the powerful tools Eldon provides in this impressive book."
C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., author of Energy Medicine
"This new book by Eldon Taylor is truly a gripping read. Eldon brings his fascinating life experiences to bear in a genuinely inspiring and uplifting way. I think anyone with my professional interest will find this book very helpful."
Raymond Moody, M.D., Ph.D., author of Life After Life
"I had the privilege of reviewing Eldon Taylor's new workbook, Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology, and working with the recordings that come as part of the package. As a hypnotherapist of twenty years, I can say that this is the best I have found - anywhere. I have read most books on self-hypnosis, trying to find something I could recommend to my clients and to those who visit The Self Improvement Blog. Most of them make it far too difficult. With Taylor's instructions and the recordings to reinforce the practice, anyone - yes, I mean anyone - can master the technique. Further, I have stayed away from subliminals because, understanding their power, I wanted to be absolutely sure they were what they claimed to be before I recommended them. I feel confident in recommending InnerTalk subliminals to everyone, knowing that Eldon Taylor has filled the gap providing high quality, trustworthy, dynamic material."
Irene Conlan, MSN, PhD, CHt.
"For more than three decades, as I studied the brain, unbeknownst to me, Eldon Taylor thoroughly studied the mind. Fortunately, I have had the privilege to meet Eldon and to read his wonderful books. In Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology, he explains the power of the mind/brain/matter connection and how we can fashion a few incredible tools for self-improvement. Every seeker's bookshelf should have this book!"

DEITY OF THE DAY

RA- SUN GOD OF ANCIENT EGYPT

To the ancient Egyptians, Ra was the ruler of the heavens. He was the god of the sun, the bringer of light, and patron to the pharaohs. According to legend, the sun travels the skies as Ra drives his chariot through the heavens. Although he originally was associated only with the midday sun, as time went by, Ra became connected to the sun's presence all day long. He was the commander of not only the sky, but the earth and the underworld as well.

Ra is nearly always portrayed with a solar disc above his head, and often takes on the aspect of a falcon. Ra is different from most Egyptian gods. Other than Osiris, nearly all deities of Egypt are tied to the earth. Ra, however, is strictly a celestial god. It is from his position in the sky that he is able to watch over his independent (and often unruly) children. On earth, Horus rules as Ra's proxy.

For people in ancient Egypt, the sun was a source of life. It was power and energy, light and warmth. It was what made the crops grow each season, so it is no surprise that the cult of Ra had immense power and was widespread. By the time of around the fourth dynasty, the pharaohs themselves were seen as incarnations of Ra, thus giving them absolute power. Many a king build a temple or pyramid in his honor - after all, keeping Ra happy virtually guaranteed a long and prosperous reign as pharaoh.

Natural Carmel Sauce Recipe (Not Bottle In Picture)

Caramel Apple Recipe

Please be careful when making caramel apples, you will be working with dangerously hot, sticky, ingredients - I always put on an apron and make sure I have a closed-toed pair of shoes on when making candy. Be extra, extra careful if you have kids around. On the ingredient front, I typically go for a mild clover honey when making caramels.
6 - 8 small apples, unwaxed, cold
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 cup honey

 — with Maria Psychicmedium Plummer. In many cultures, magic is an integral part of everyday life. The group known as the Rom -- sometimes referred to as Gypsies - is no exception, and they have a strong and rich magical heritage.

It is important to note that the term gypsy was originally used derogatorily to refer to the ethnic group known as the Romani. The Romani were -- and continue to be -- a group from Eastern Europe and possibly northern India. The word "gypsy" came from the mistaken notion that the Romani were from Egypt rather than Europe and Asia. The word later became corrupted and was applied to any group of nomadic travelers.

Today, people of Rom descent live in many parts of Europe, including in the United Kingdom. Although they still face widespread discrimination, they manage to hang on to many of their magical and folkloric traditions. Let’s look at some examples of Romani magic that have lasted through the ages.

Folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland studied the Rom and their legends, and wrote extensively on the subject. In his 1891 work, Gypsy Sorcery and Fortune Telling, Leland says that much of the popular Romani magic was dedicated to practical applications - love spells, charms, recovery of stolen property, protection of livestock, and other such things.

Leland says that among Hungarian Gypsies (his terminology), if an animal was stolen, its dung was thrown to the east and then to the west, and the incantation, “Where the sun sees thee, hence return to me!” is uttered. However, if the stolen animal is a horse, the owner takes the horse’s harness, buries it, and makes a fire over it, saying, “Who stole thee, sick he may be, may his strength depart, do not remain by him. Return sound to me, his strength lies here, as the smoke goes away!”

There is also a belief that if you are searching for stolen property, and you encounter willow branches which have grown themselves into a knot, you can take the knot and use it to “bind the thief’s luck.”

Leland explains that the Rom are strong believers in amulets and talismans, and that items carried in one’s pocket - a coin, a stone - become imbued with the characteristics of the bearer. He refers to these as “pocket deities,” and says that certain objects were automatically conferred great power - shells and knives in particular.

Among some Rom tribes, animals and birds are attributed divinatory and prophetic powers. Swallows seem to be popular in these tales. They are considered bringers of luck, and often where the first swallow is seen in the spring, treasure is to be found. Horses too are considered magical - the skull of a horse will keep ghosts out of your house.

Water is considered a source of great magical power, according to Leland. He says it is lucky to meet a woman carrying a full jug of water, but bad luck if the jug is empty. It is a custom to pay homage to the gods of water, the Wodna zena, after filling a jug or a bucket by spilling a few drops on the ground as an offering. In fact, it is considered rude - and even dangerous - to take a drink of water without first paying tribute.

The book Gypsy Folk Tales was published in 1899, by Francis Hindes Groome, a contemporary of Leland’s. Groome pointed out that there were a vast range of backgrounds amongst the groups labeled as “Gypsies,” many of whom came from different countries of origin. Groome distinguished between Hungarian Gypsies, Turkish Gypsies, and even Scottish and Welsh "tinkers".

Finally, it should be stressed that most Romani magic is rooted not only in the folklore of the culture, but also in the context of the Romani society itself. There are a number of books available in the Neopagan community that purport to teach “Gypsy magic,” but this is not authentic Rom folk magic. In other words, for someone who is not Romani to market the spells and rituals of this particular group is nothing less than cultural appropriation - much like when non-Native Americans attempt to market a practice of Native American spirituality. The Rom tend to view any non-Romani practitioners as outsiders at best, and at worst, as charlatans and frauds.

The Holly King, the Lord of the Winterwood and darksome twin of the waning year, rules from Midsummer to Midwinter. At Midsummer, he goes to battle with his twin, the Oak King, for the favor of the Goddess. He slays the Oak King, who goes to rest in Caer Arianrhod until they do battle again at Midsummer. The Oak King and Holly King are mortal enemies at Midsummer and Midwinter, but they are two si
des of a whole. Neither could exist without the other.

Two themes run throughout the Holly King and Oak King saga. The first, of course, is the two great yearly battles between the two. The second is the sacrificial mating, death, and resurrection of each in his season. At Lammas, the peak of the Holly King's reign, he sacrificially mates with the Great Mother, dies in her embrace, and is resurrected. This is an enactment of the natural fertility theme of the season, and is not uncommon in other mythologies: Osiris, Tammuz, Dionysus, Balder, and Jesus are only a few other gods who die and are resurrected. (The Oak King on the other hand, mates, dies and is resurrected at Beltane.) This aspect of the Holly King and Oak King is not widely discussed, but is an important element in their roles as fertility gods.

Here is also some additional info: (Very interesting take on the season :)

At the Winter Solstice, the two god themes of the year's cycle coincide -- even more dramatically than they do at the Summer Solstice. Yule (from the Norse iul, meaning wheel) marks the death and the rebirth of the Sun God; it also marks the vanquishing of the Holly King, the god of the Waning Year, by the Oak King, the God of the Waxing Year. The Goddess, who was Death-in-Life at Midsummer, now shows her Life-in-Death aspect; for although at this season she is the leprous white lady, Queen of the cold darkness, yet this is her moment for giving birth to the Child of Promise, the Son-Lover who will re-fertilize her and bring back light and warmth to her Kingdom.

Modern Christmas celebrations are full of pagan symbology. Santa Claus is the Holly King, the sleigh is the solar chariot, the eight reindeer are the eight Sabbats, their horns represent the Horned God, the North Pole symbolizes the Land of Shadows and the dying solar year, and the gifts are meant both to welcome the Oak King as the sun reborn and as a reminder of the gift of the Holly King, who must depart for the Oak King to rule.

What, you didn't know Santa Claus was a Witch? He touches the side of his nose to make himself smaller and enters your home through the fireplace, he uses fairy dust to make his sleigh and reindeer fly, then he gives toys to every kid in the world in one night; "Only a Witch could pull that off". ~BM
Understanding the Maiden, Mother, Crone, Goddess and God

Seems we are getting many questions about our faith and how it works. How we see the Goddess and or God within our spiritually of who we are. I can not answer for everyone but I will share how I see and understand the power that be.

Maiden, Protector of Innocence; The Maiden signifies youth, the excitement of the chase, and the newness of

life and magick. In human age she would be between puberty and her twenties. She does not have a mate.

Mother, Protector of the Home; The Mother stands for nurturing, caring, fertility; she is a woman in the prime of her life and at the peak of her power. She protects her own and will ensure that justice is done and done well. This woman is usually mated. In human age, she would be seen as a woman in her thirties to mid-forties.

Crone, Protector of Wisdom; The Crone is a being of age-old wisdom. She is shrew and counsels well. She cares for the Maiden and the Mother as well as the off-spring thereof. She is logical and can be terrible in her vengeance. She stands at the door to the dimension of death. In human years, she is approximately 45 or older. The Crone is the Most difficult of the three to place in human age.

Within this concept of the trinity, Maiden, Mother, and Crone are seen as a triple deity. However, the Gods and Goddesses often have three functions. In some cases, there are three names which specific for one deity, and in other cases three Gods or three Goddesses may grouped into a trinity.

An example of three Goddesses which form a trinity would be the three daughters of Fiachna: Eriu, Banba, and Fodla. The Morrigna, a triple Goddess of battle is composed of the three Goddess: Macha, Badb, and the Morrigan. The Faiths of life and time.

In the case of a God or Goddess having three functions, these three functions specific to certain paths. A Witch will only follow one of these paths them self. However, in times of need they may call to their particular God or Goddess in reference to one of the other paths.

Around 7,000 BC, a Triple-Goddess holding the aspects of virgin, mother, and crone/hag was worshiped in areas of Scotland, England and Ireland. However, this is not the only known example of a Goddess trinity which contained these three aspects in combination. The Triple Goddess or the Blessed Trinity of the Goddess predates the christian concept of a god trinity with the God as you see the Father, Son and Spirit by thousands of years.

In some cases, there are three names which specific for one deity, and in other cases three Gods or three Goddesses may grouped into a trinity. But within my faith we look upon Goddess and God equally and welcome both with love and respect.

The religion of the Goddess has been called both polytheistic and monotheistic at the same time. The Goddess is polytheistic in that she has so many names and forms. She is also monotheistic in that the are all symbols of the single Great Mother, the Creator of All.

The God is usually seen as lover, consort, and son of the Goddess. Both are needed for creation and balance. It is a balance that is shown in myth after myth, culture after culture. As with the Goddess, the God also has many names and associations. There is the God as lover, warrior, and Father.

They are brought together and honored equally. No one power set above the other, both are seen, equal and balanced. Because it is a religion of based in nature it is hard to see the concept of only one.

For in all things of life and nature, you must have both aspects. Male and Female, without both there is nothing.

I hope this helps you to understand my belief of the trinity and the Goddess/God power.

Blessings,
Lady Abigail

INDIGENOUS AMERICAN MONTH

The month of November has been designated as National Indigenous American Month here on Turtle Island (North America).
During this time, many of our Indigenous American people and groups go to local schools, colleges, universities and other organizations presenting on our specific tribal cultures and traditions in an attempt to bring our true history to the Non-Indigenous population. This time is also used as an educational opportunity to dispel a lot of the stereotyping and mysticism that the movie industry and government has portrayed of our people in a very positive way.
This should also be a good time for all our Indigenous peoples to unite and come together to work on many of the issues facing our peoples in today’s world and for the betterment of all our
Indigenous people of all tribes. It is up to us to make a difference in our world while maintaining our traditions, cultures and languages.
We are still here after all the atrocities and genocide of the last 600 years, which shows our strength, resolve and determination to survive. Now we have to make sure the true cultures of our peoples survive as well. We owe this to our ancestors, for they have died to make sure our ways, ceremonies and cultures could survive.
Walk proud and carry yourselves in a good way as representatives of all our Indigenous Americans of all tribes and Nations of Turtle Island.

Sgi,
Do you truly think the soldier of other faiths care that their fellow soldier protecting their back is Pagan? Do you think the tv preacher understands and appreciates there is Pagan blood being spilled in war zones, so they can have the freedom to preach their hate message at people who do not agree with them?

Pagans/Witches/Wiccans are people too, who live, love, fight and die for their countries. ~BM
Peace of spirit is all that can truly buy piece of mind.

Fall Spell Blessings for New Beginnings

This is a simple Spell for Fall to add energy and blessings of the Goddess within your spellwork of new beginnings. You can add it to your personal spell or use the spell below.

You will need:

1 - 3 x 3 piece of paper. Write on it all the things you want to accomplish, start and find within new beginnings. It can be a new love, new job, new understandings, whatever you hope to begin.

1 - Natural color candle, this can be a white or bee's wax.

Place the candle in a small bowl. Add water to the bowl to cover 1 inch of the candles base. Say the chant below and light the candle.

Read aloud the new beginnings you have written on the paper. Now light the paper to burn using the candles flame and drop the ash as it burning into the candle and water bowl.

Repeat again the chant below: ( You may repeat the chant as many times as you would like, I find the more I repeat it the more power within the spell.)

Sweet Goddess of the Veil,
Hear our words and hear our spell.
Let us be open to New Beginnings,
That we might find truth and all things.
Show us the light of spirit within all,
As we walk within your colors of fall.
May we remember all you have done
that brings unto us both Moon and Sun,
Carry our words across the veil,
In this our new beginnings Spell...

Allow the candle to burn all the way out and bury all the remains and water.

This is also a good time to read the wax within the water to see what may be foretold to you.

ஜ Serpents ஜ

Serpents are represented as potent guardians of temples and other sacred spaces. Thus, they are natural guardians of treasures or sacred sites.
ஜ Serpents ஜ

Serpents are represented as potent guardians of temples and other sacred spaces. This connection may be grounded in the observation that when threatened, some snakes (such as rattlesnakes or cobras) frequently hold and defend their ground, first resorting to threatening display and then fighting, rather than retreat. Thus, they are natural guardians of treasures or sacred sites.

Greek cosmological myths tell of how Ophion the snake incubated the primordial egg from which all created things were born.

Some cultures regarded snakes as immortal because they appeared to be reincarnated from themselves when they sloughed their skins. Snakes were often also associated with immortality because they were observed biting their tails to form a circle and when they coiled they formed spirals. Both circles and spirals were seen as symbols of eternity.

As a Native American Indian symbol (depending on the nation/tribe) the snake can be a masculine symbol, associated with the phallus of lightning which is considered a medicine staff of tremendous assertive power. Other tribes lean in the direction of feminine attribution for the snake and pair it with mothering (creation), and lunar (moon) symbolism.

Whether raising itself in masculine authority, or encircling the Earth in a motherly fashion the snake symbol of the Native American's was highly regarded; utilized in ritual to invoke an element of pointed focus and weighty influence.

The ancient Celts were extremely nature-wise too, and approached snake symbolism from the behavior and life cycle of this magnificent creature. From the Celtic perspective, the snake was a symbol of secret knowledge, cunning and transformation.

Further, the snake Celtic symbol comes from observations of the European viper (also known as the adder) which is the only (along with the common grass snake) species able to tolerate the colder climate of the ancient Celts.

In the keen Celtic mind, snake symbolic meaning of transformation came from the shedding of its skin. Physical evidence of leaving its form behind (casting off the old self), and emerging a sleeker, newer version made the snake a powerful symbol of rebirth and renewal.

As far as the occult (hidden) symbolic meaning in Celtic and other cultures, this can be connected to the sleuth-like ways of the snake.

Disappearing in colder months and summoned by the sun marks the snake's connection to the shadow worlds with its successful ability to live within the dark realms for extended periods of time. Alternatively, the snake softly moves into the embrace of the sun, and so it encapsulates the ancient magician's creed of moving in perfect rhythm of natural forces.

In Eastern Indian myth the Sanskrit word for snake is naga and these are associated with the element of water. Picking up water's symbolism of emotion, love and motion, nagas in this light are considered a feminine aspect and embody nurturing, benevolent, wise qualities.

To wit, the practice of nagayuna in Eastern Indian alchemy seeks to achieve loving harmony between the physical and ethereal. Simply put, all of us striving to better ourselves by calmly easing into places of personal balance within the cosmic balance of the whole are practicing this ancient technique.

Snake tattoo symbolism varies according to the bearer of the mark. For example, I have a back piece depicting two serpents (nagas) wrapped around the seven prime chakras down the length of my spine. This (to me) incorporates the kundalini power available to all humans.

Additionally, this entwined snake imagery hearkens to the caduceus, in which the staves of Asclepius are made of two polar (and copulating) serpents which symbolizes balance, equanimity, union and regeneration.

Affirmation – To Remember I am of Her. I am of Magick. I am of Dark. I am of Light. I am of Love
Lady Patti

What was yesterday is gone…what was done yesterday is a lesson learned.
Today I walk away from the Pain of the yesterdays and turned to the hope of the Tomorrows.
If I look back I will see that the Path was worth it to get here….
To the Light of Love that exist in every moment of my day.
I walk the Path of Her Light through the pains and with the happiness.
I wake up today and every day with the Knowledge that She is there with me.
I wake up today and every day with the Love of Her… the Light of Her
And The Strength of a thousand Spirits of Her.
Today I wake up to the Music in My Heart and the Dance in My Soul.
Today I wake up with the Power of Her Magick.!

A CHARM TO SECURE EMPLOYMENT

Take a green handkerchief or a piece of green cloth roughly that size, lay it flat with one of the corners facing you.
Place upon it 3 cardamom seed, a bay leaf and a sprig or tsp. of rosemary. These herbs surround you in self-confidence and attract energy.Cardamom sweetens your personality and brings out your natural eloquence. Bay leaves are symbols of success and triumph. Rosemary is a herb of achievement and mental alertness.

Tie the corners together with a length of green or gold ribbon so that you have a little bundle of herbs. Before each interview, hold this bundle and visualize yourself walking into the interview room, radiating confidence. Imagine yourself being in a position to pick and choose jobs at will. Carry this to your job interviews and accept that any rejection is a sign from the universe that the job was not right for you.

Message from the Universe….from me to you….

Inner Strength/Shield Candle Spell

Need:
Red Candle
Athame or knife: Write on the candle the thing you wish strength for…..
Sage oil (anoint candle) …you can mix sage with regular oil if you don’t have sage oil. (Sage gives us protection, wisdom, wishes) --- anoint oil from the top of the candle to the middle in a downward motion, then from the bottom of the candle to the middle in an upward motion.
As you light the candle…remember to concentrate on what it is that you need strength for and then say:

Spirits of my strength – I call upon thee
Hear my wishes, hear my plea
Help me to build an inner shield
To protect my will so to hold at bay
Those things that make me weak
Those things that would engulf me
As the candle burns so that it may extinguished
Those things that would take my strength from me
So mote it be

Always good to let the candle burn out to complete the spell.
