      Seasonal Rituals (14 photos)
      Mabon Ritual For this ritual you will need an apple and a chalice of wine or juice. Grape or apple juices are excellent choices if you cannot drink alcohol. If it is at all possible, this ritual should take place in a secluded cemetery. If this isn't possible, you should try to visit a cemetery where your loved ones are buried and leave apples to wish them a quick rebirth. When you are ready to begin, cast your circle, and invite your deities. Say: Blessed be this season of Mabon, time of the second harvest, the harvest of fruit and wine. Tonight all things are in balance: Goddess and God, Life and Death, Light and Dark. Tonight the darkness will conquer the light, leading us deeper into the waning year. If you are not at the cemetery of your loved ones, visualize if you can their resting places. Take the apple and hold it in front of you at heart level. Say: Ancient symbol of life, death and rebirth, take away my mourning. Help me to be assured that death is not a permanent parting, but a new and joyful beginning. If you are in the cemetery place the apple in front of the grave of a loved one. The apple symbolizes reincarnation. If you aren't at the cemetery, you should save the apple to bury in the Earth later to symbolize your hope for rebirth to all life. With the somber part of the ritual over now, you should turn yourself to gladness and honor the God of wine and the aging Crone Goddess. Take the chalice of wine and hold it upward. Say: Blessed Crone, thank you for bringing me safely to this season. God of wine, thank you for your gift of the grape. Now you can make a toast to whomever or what ever you like. Make as many as you toasts as you want and make them as silly as you want!! When you are finished, say: Blessed be Mabon, season of bounty. Now spend some time in your circle meditating or communing with the spirits that may surround you. Then close the circle however you wish.
      You will need a dish on the altar containing a single sheaf of wheat or an ear of corn or some wheat covered with a cloth. Decorate altar and circle with ping cones, grains, acorns, red poppies, autumnal flower fruits and leaves. Say: Now is the time of balance, when night and day face each other as equals. Yet at this season the night is waxing and the light is waning; for nothing ever remains without change, in the tides of earth and sky. Whatever rises must also set, and whatsoever sets must also rise. In token of which, I will dance the dance of going and returning! Dance going slowly widdershins in an inward spiral until you are in the center of the circle. Sit in front of the dish and remove the cloth, and say: Behold the mystery: in silence is the seed of wisdom gained. Meditate silently. When ready, rise and go to the east candle, facing the west and say: Farewell, O sun, ever-returning light, The hidden god who ever yet remains He now departs to the land of youth Through the gates of death To dwell enthroned, the judge of gods and men, The horned leader of the hosts of air. Yet, as He stands unseen without the circle So dwelleth He within the secret seed The seed of new-reaped grain, the seed of flesh; Hidden in the earth, the marvelous seed of the stars. In Him is life, and life is the light of man, That which was never born, and never dies. Therefore the wise ones weep not, but rejoice. Raise hands high in blessing. Return to the center of the circle and dance slowy doesil in an outward spiral. Replace dish on the altar.
      Place upon the altar apples, pomegranates, pumpkins, squashes and other late autumn fruits. Autumn flowers such as marigolds and chrysanthemums are fine too. Write on a piece of paper an aspect of your life which you wish to be free of: anger, a baneful habit, misplaced feelings, disease. The cauldron or some similar tool must be present before the altar as well, on a trivet or some other heat-proof surface (if the legs aren’t long enough). A small, flat dish marked with an eight-spoked wheel symbol should also be there. Prior to the ritual, sit quietly and think of friends and loved ones who have passed away. Do not despair. Know that they have gone on to greater things. Keep firmly in mind that the physical isn’t the absolute reality, and that souls never die. Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle of Stones. Recite the Blessing Chant. Invoke the Goddess and God. Lift one of the pomegranates and, with your freshly-washed white-handled knife, pierce the skin of the fruit. Remove several seeds and place them on the wheel-marked dish. Raise your wand, face the altar and say: On this night of Samhain I mark your passing, O Sun King, through the sunset into the Land of the Young. I mark also the passing of all who have gone before, and all who will go after. O Gracious Goddess, Eternal Mother, You who gives birth to the fallen, teach me to know that in the time of the greatest darkness there is the greatest light. Taste the pomegranate seeds; burst them with your teeth and savour their, bittersweet flavour. Look down at the eight-spooked symbol on the plate; the wheel of the year, the cycle of the seasons, the end and beginning of all creation. Light a fire within the cauldron (a candle is fine). Sit before it holding the piece of paper, gazing at its flames. Say: Wise One of the Waning Moon, Goddess of the starry night, I create this fire within your cauldron to transform that which is plaguing me. May the energies be reversed: From darkness, light! From bane, good! From death, birth! Light the paper in the cauldron’s flame and drop it inside. As it burns, know that your ill diminishes, lessens and finally leaves you as it is consumed within the universal fires. If you wish, you may attempt scrying or some other form of divination, for this is a perfect time to look into the past or future. Try to recall past lives too, if you will. But leave the dead in peace. Honour them with your memories but do not call them to you. Release any pain and sense of loos you may feel into the cauldron’s flames. Works of magic, if necessary, may follow. Celebrate the Simple Feast. The circle is released.

          What are handfastings? For those of you who did not catch the pagan origins behind the phrase “tying the knot,” the term “handfasting” comes from the tradition of two people pledging themselves to one another (oftentimes for a year and a day) and sealing that pledge by binding their hands together with cord and knotting it. Today handfastings vary immensely in their forms. Some are legal marriages, and some are private promises. Some choose to continue the traditional year-and-a-day time frame, others for as long as love will last; some for life, and others for all lifetimes to come. Variations aside, the goal of these rituals is the same: to make vows of devotion witnessed by family, friends, and the divine.
          First, as a time of new beginnings, weddings should ideally take place some time between twelve hours after the new Moon and when the moon the moon is full. Before the new Moon is twelve hours old it is still considered dark, which is not an advantageous phase for weddings. Second, try not to marry while the Moon is void-of-course (which happens before a sun enters a new sign, and can last anywhere from two minutes to two hours), as things undertaken during that time do not turn out as intended. The third big thing to consider is whether Mercury or Venus may be retrograde during your chosen time. Both of these will cause problems. Mercury retrograde is well known for making plans, communications, and things break down. Venus retrograde could point to the holding back or misdirection of love and good things between the couple.           Some people renew the vow every year. Other couples simply part and go separate ways in life. Still others have a ritual to mark the ending of the Handfasting commitment. It has also become popular to follow a Handfasting a year and a day later with a legal wedding.
          Each Wiccan and Pagan path has different decrees concerning the color, length, type and of number of cords used to handfast the couple. One custom may have the couple facing each other, binding both pairs of hands of the bride and groom. Another custom is to have only the right hands, and another one of each right and left. There are many variations of the handfasting rite. It all depends on the bride, groom, and the High Priest/ess whom they chose to preside over their wedding ceremony. The handfasting ritual is a beautiful, magickal rite of passage. Many non-Pagan and non-Wiccan couples are adopting this old custom, much like when couples borrow from other traditions to craft their own ceremony to match their distinctive personalities.

A fairytale Legend

She possessed the art of magick, herbal healing and was said to be the sister/or half-sister of King Arthur.
According to legends Morgan Le Fay (Morgan the Fairy) was the mistress of Merlin, who taught her magick.
She is to have plotted again Arthur to steal the Excalibur and bring him down. Yet she had also come to his aid when he was mortality wounded in the battle of Camlan.
Morgan was one of the four queens who took him away to the Isle of Avalon, where she used her magic to save his life.
She has been described as a Goddess and a character for various Celtic myths and deities.
In Welsh folklore she was related to lake fairies who seduced and then abandon human lovers.
Irish Folklore was that she lived in a fairy mound from which she flew in hideous disguises to scare people.
In English and Scottish folklore, she lived in Avalon or in various castles including one near Edinburgh said to be inhabited by wicked fairies.
She is also said to be related to the mermaids of Breton Coast, called Morganes who enchanted sailors. Some stories said that the sailors either went to their deaths or were transported to a blissful underwater paradise. In Italy, mirages over the Straits of Messina are stilled the Fata Morganas.
Morgan was sometimes portrayed as an evil hag or crone.
Morgan was said to have an extreme sexual appetite and continually capturing knights to satisfy her “appetite”.

Hera

Hera's Appearance: A young beautiful woman, said to be the most beautiful of all goddesses, even beating out Aphrodite.

Hera's Symbol or Attribute: The peacock.

Hera's Strengths: Determined defender of the sanctity of marriage and monogamy.

Hera's Weaknesses: Determined defender of the sanctity of marriage and monogamy - but married Zeus.

Birthplace: Said to be born on the island of Samos or at Argos.

Parents: Born of the Titans Rhea and Kronos.

Siblings Zeus, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, and Poseidon.

Spouse: Zeus, King of the Gods.

Hera's Children: With Zeus, Ares.
Hephaestus, usually said to be by Zeus, but sometimes by Hera alone. Her daughters were Hebe, goddess of health, and Eileithyia, the Cretan goddess of childbirth. Also, by herself, Typhon, the serpent of Delphi.

Some Major Temple Sites: The island of Samos was said to be where Zeus and Hera spent the first secret three hundred years of their marriage, making this the longest honeymoon on record.

Basic Story: Zeus was the brother of Hera, who fell in love with him from the first moment she saw him, and eventually got a love charm from Aphrodite to seal the deal. She is very relationship-oriented and spends much of her time driving off Zeus's innumerable nymphs, mistresses, and other dalliances. She also sometimes torments the offspring of those unions, especially Hercules. To her credit, she's gorgeous and kept Zeus busy on his honeymoon for three hundred years, so she rightfully wonders why on earth he needs to go anywhere else. When she's really fed up, she wanders off by herself, always hoping Zeus will miss her and seek her, usually eventually relenting and returning without being so sought.


Interesting Fact: Hera is said to restore her virginity each year by bathing in Kanathos, a sacred spring. One tale suggests Hera used magic to force Zeus into marrying her in a secret ceremony. Given some of Zeus's later behavior, perhaps it was a secret even from him. Other tales have Zeus seducing her, in the form of a damp cuckoo bird seeking refuge in her lap during a storm.

In Roman mythology, Hera is considered equivalent to Juno

      ½ part bay
      2 parts cinnamon
      ¼ part horehound

      Four Leafed Clover- Seven grains of wheat laid on top of a four-leafed clover will enable one to see faeries.

      Gorse- A prickly hedge grown to protect one's home against faeries, they can't get through it.

      Peonies- Hang the seeds and roots around your neck to protect yourself from mischievous faeries and imps.

      Straw- Attracts faeries, they are believed to live inside the straws.

      Thyme- Wear it to see faeries.

      1 oz (30gm) cedarwood chips
      1/2 oz (15gm) camphor
      7 drops musk oil
      Female sweat (as much as possible)
      6 olives unstuffed and preferably black

      Blend the first four ingredients well, at the full moon, and add the
      olives. Put in a jar and leave for one month to mature. Then remove the
      olives (Which will have imparted their essence to the rest) and throw
      them away. Stuffed olives, both black and green, are an obvious food for
      a ritual of Athena, also stuffed vine leaves, a very Athenian dish. If
      possible, of course, the wine should be Greek - especially retsina,
      though that is an acquired taste.

Sprinkle about the house to promote peace and tranquility.

Crush 1 ½ oz. of white rose petals in 16 oz. of Spring Water.
Let the rose petals steep for 3 days, strain and bottle the liquid for use.

Fill a special glass jar or bottle with spring water,
one with an image of the sun or other related symbol on
it, in the sun from sunrise to sunset, allowing it soak up
its energies. Cover the jar or bottle with a gold piece of
cloth or bag that will hold the energy inside of it, and store
it in a cabinet for later use.
